Help for Myles' Hospital Fees

At the end of January 2017, my boyfriend Myles Woods flew into the UK with the intention of proposing to me on Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, on the 12th February 2017, he was the victim of a vicious, unprovoked attacked that left him with a leg broken in several places, a cracked ankle, severe tissue damage, a facial fracture and three lost teeth. His injuries resulted in three operations, hospitalisation for three weeks and on-going pain throughout his long rehabilitation. Because Myles is American, he has had to pay for all of his hospital bills himself (which he did immediately) and this has so far totalled over £11,500.
The Police failed to act quickly enough (it was 10 days after the attack before they finally took witness statements), which allowed the assailant to go to ground. As a result, witness’ memories had become faded, especially for Myles who was suffering from concussion, so when the suspect was finally caught the identification line-up proved unsuccessful. This meant that the assailant could not be brought to court and we would not be awarded compensation for Myles’ injuries.
We decided to try contacting a Criminal Injuries Compensation lawyer but after months of waiting for them to research the case we have just been told that because Myles is American he does not qualify for compensation via this route either.
How can it be that such a gentle, honest man can be attacked so violently and injured so badly, and yet not be considered eligible for any compensation?
I am writing this now to ask for help from my community. Would you be willing to contribute towards the costs of Myles’ hospital bills? The cost of picking up the pieces after this terrible attack has wiped out our savings and left us seriously out of pocket, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope the good people of Weston Super Mare might come together to help us resume our lives together, which have been on hold since February 2017, and also restore our faith in local community spirit, and instil a sense of pride rather than fear in our home town.
