Peter Glover was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS in August 2016 just as he was approaching his 60th birthday. We are a group of 6 that has come together to rally support for our special friend. We want to reach far and wide to help Peter be as comfortable and as cared for as possible in the challenging journey that lies ahead.
ALS is an incurable neurodegenerative disease where the nerve cells that control the body’s muscles die. Bulbar ALS starts in the brainstem and works its way down the body affecting limbs, swallowing, speech and respiration. In the last 6 months, Peter’s dexterity has almost disappeared and he cannot lift his arms. Eating and dressing are already becoming difficult.
This devastating diagnosis has rocked Peter’s world. He is a loving husband to Pat, a father to two young adult children, Jack and Hanna, a son, a brother to four siblings, and a good friend to so many.
Pete is one of the good guys you have the honour of meeting in life. He has a captivating smile, a gentle manner and a good sense of humour. When you talk to him, you have his full attention. He loves a party and is fiercely competitive at cards. He is a skier, windsurfer and curler. He loves the outdoors and together, he and Pat have had many great adventures. Now they need our help. ALS is unforgiving emotionally, physically, mentally and financially. It knows no compromise.
Pat and Peter will soon be moving out of their home into a place that is more accessible. It will require some modifications such as widening doorways and building a walk-in shower. As Peter’s mobility becomes more compromised, a tracking system will need to be installed in the ceiling and Peter will require a custom wheelchair as well as transportation services. Occupational Therapy and personal care assistance will be essential. Throughout all of this, Peter and Pat will need our love and ongoing emotional support.
Our group has come together from different parts of Peter’s life. Some of us have never met in person but our connection to Pat and Peter has compelled us to act and share this story. We are asking for your support in their time of need. No contribution is too little and every contribution will mean so much.
