My name is Margaret Rehman, and I have created this campaign for my son Derrick Murdock.
Derrick is a lifelong musician, a bass guitarist based in California he works with and travels with various bands and musical artists most recently he traveled to St. Charles, Louisiana to perform with Marilyn Mc Coo & Billy Davis Jr. when he arrived to his hotel he noticed an unusual swelling in his right leg, during the flight back to California his leg had doubled in size, upon returning he made his way to the ER where he was subsequently admitted. After a battery of tests, he was informed that the swelling in his leg was being caused by an aggressive cancerous, malignant mass growing in his pelvic region. The mass was cutting off the blood flow to his femoral artery causing the leg to swell. A bone marrow test concluded that the malignancy is Stage -1 B-cell Non- Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The doctors recommend an immediate course of pre-treatment followed by chemotherapy to prevent the malignancy from spreading.
Derrick’s body responded well to the chemotherapy with a noted 30% decrease in the mass and swelling in his leg but has since suffered multiple complications and an allergic reaction from the pre-treatment medicine used to combat the side effects of chemo.
Derrick has successfully completed the first in what will be several months of on-going chemotherapy treatment. Consequently, he will not have the freedom to work as he will be an out-patient for the duration until the course of chemotherapy is complete. He may experience possible bouts of fatigue, skin irritation, loss of appetite and nausea preventing him from doing the very basic of day to day tasks.
As a parent I want to protect my son from what is to come. I can't even imagine the over-whelming amount of information he’s had to process and the range of emotions that he is going through. There are so few ways we can help him face these overwhelming circumstances. One thing we can do is allow him to focus all his energy on the difficult time ahead to push through the next rounds of chemotherapy. That's the purpose of this campaign.
About the finances: Derrick is a bass guitarist who works with local musicians as well as various musical artists traveling the globe and since admittance and unfortunate complications, he’s had to cancel countless engagements and obligations placing an increasing hardship on his finances. As he is unable to work he will be unable to support himself or financially manage his on-going medical treatments.
Derrick’s diagnosis mandates an aggressive course of treatment over the 6 to 12 months. It couldn't have come at a worse time, financially. The doctors have expressed Derrick will likely be dealing with and focusing on his treatment to beat the Lymphoma and then the possible realities that come out of having no immune system. After six months of chemo, they're looking at possible radiation, although doctors want to avoid radiation it might be a contingency after chemo.
Derricks employers are sympathetic to his situation and will keep him in mind for future engagements while he gives his all to his treatment.
I am creating this campaign to help with all of the expenses that goes along with caring for and living with Cancer and to make sure that Derrick can keep a roof over his head so he has a comfortable, quiet place to rest and recuperate. There will be a long list of medical bills, driving expenses, food, the rent payments and utilities.
Derrick is good, deserving man. We can't believe he is facing this. No one should have to battle this disease but sadly so many are forced to the harsh reality of cancer.
