My name is Conor Naughton, and I teach 8th grade mathematics at Hilsman Middle School in Athens, Georgia. Each year, we send the entire 8th grade on a field trip to the University of Georgia, where students get an up close and personal tour of the University, talk to current UGA students, and even get to eat at the UGA dining halls. It is regarded by students and teachers alike as one of the best experiences of the school year - a sort of culmination of their schooling thus far before they begin their transition to high school.
Despite the obstacles many of our students face, our community has high aspirations for our students and know that their potential is limited only by their inability to see a path to a better future. This field trip is designed to help students see that pathway. The trip is scheduled to take place March 15th and 16th, 2017.
The cost for each student is $12, which can be difficult to pay for many of our families. Our community is seeking donations to help defray costs for our students to have this important experience. All donations will be used to cover the cost of our students going on this invaluable and impactful visit to the University. Since the trip is coming up during the middle of March, we are accepting donations through March 3rd, 2017.
Our community is committed to the success of all of our students and this experience is an important part of expanding their horizons and goals. This trip to the University is essential for young people, many of whom will be first-generation college students, to begin to see themselves at college. Donating $12 is enough to fully support one student, but I promise that any amount you can contribute would be appreciated more than you will ever know.
