Severe Drought and Water Rate Increase threaten to end the garden program at Hope Initiatives. We seek funding for the design and installation of a grey water system, additional solar to ensure the amazing aquaponics farm can run continually, and to settle outstanding water bill before the municipality cancels water service.
Since 2002, Hope Initiatives Namibia has been providing safety, education, and nutritious meals to Orphaned and Vulnerable Children in the settlements of Tobias Hainyeko Constituency in Windhoek. This year, Hope Initiatives will feed over 85,000 nutritious meals to 300+ children. See more at http://hisanamibia.org/
The Soup Kitchen and Training Gardens on site at Hope Initiatives supply 5-7lbs of fresh green vegetables to the soup kitchen DAILY. This garden also serves as a teaching site for Organic Gardening practices within the settlement--which is home to 45,000 people living without electricity or running water in tin shacks with dirt floors. Most adults in the settlement live on less that $3USD a day and the ability to grow food is life saving.
Hope Initiatives has ALWAYS used sustainable water practices. Rainwater catchment practices have historically provided 70-90% of the water used for the garden every year. Two years of record drought have left the site dependant on city water--a state of dependence too costly to maintain.
Please help today! This garden is so close to being sustainable, and it feeds so many kids and teaches so many people of all ages!
