Kaleb's Road to Recovery
On Tuesday, January 28th, Kaleb Bachtold had an MRI as he was experiencing head and neck pain, numbness and the loss of the use of his left arm and hand. The MRI revealed Kaleb had a tumor in his spine at the base of his neck. Due to the severity, he was immediately taken to the Children's Hospital in Denver, Colorado where he underwent many more tests and scans. Soon after, Kaleb was scheduled to have surgery to remove the tumor that was intertwined with his nerves and spine. At this point he had already lost the use of his left arm and hand. The doctors were able to remove approximately half the tumor and he immediately regained 20% of the use of his left arm.
Kaleb has been diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. He also had traces of cancer cells in his bone marow. The hospital where Kaleb is being treated specializes in Ewing's kids and Kaleb's case is very rare. At the young age of 16, Kaleb is undergoing aggressive and extensive treatments in efforts to save his life. Kaleb is currently going through four types of chemotherapy. This treatment is expected to last about 5 months when he will then receive radiation to shrink the remainder of the tumor not removed by the surgery. After the radiation, he will undergo more chemotherapy to treat the cancer cells found in the bone marrow.
Kaleb Bachtold and his devoted mother, Ingrid Eide Greenwood, are on a long and difficult road to recovery. His treatments are expected to last a year or more and Ingrid will be by his side throughout his recovery. Ingrid has had to leave her job in Oregon and is now living out of a suitcase in Denver.
As you can imagine there is a massive financial stress and we are trying to gather funds to assist Kaleb and Ingrid with a modest year's living expenses. In an effort to keep you informed and to alleviate as much of the financial stress as possible, we have set up this site.
At this time it is at upmost importance for everyone to remain positive and focused on what's important: Kaleb's recovery. We know many of you have been asking how to help, and assisting with living expenses would be an incredible support to the family. We would also ask you to share the link to this request on your Facebook page and please ask your friends, family and co-workers to do the same.
Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers and we thank you in advance for any donations you can make.
