HACC Student Emergency Assistance

I love HACC because my educational experience prepared me to succeed in my dream career. As a nurse, I am doing what I love – helping others. While I did not receive emergency assistance funds from HACC, I know what a difference help from someone who cares can make. Join me and show that you “Heart” HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.

Want to Give Back?
Students need YOUR support through HACC’s student emergency assistance funds. The funds assist students enrolled at HACC who could be forced to delay their education or leave college if they do not receive extraordinary financial help. When students who already struggle to pay for school face financial hardships, such as vehicle repairs, a house fire, homelessness or a health emergency, where can they turn? HACC’s emergency assistance funds cover a portion of these unexpected expenses to help students remain enrolled in school. Please help me in raising funds that will help lift others out of poverty by providing them with education and training that will help them to earn family-sustaining wages.

About HACC’s Emergency Assistance Funds
Emergency Assistance Funds are available to assist students facing emergencies and crises.

At any given time, “life” can happen to any of us…an unexpected illness, a fire or medical emergency, car failure, loss of childcare, etc. These emergency funds can help HACC students pay for their books and course-required supplies, course fees, physicals, emergency auto repairs, bus passes, childcare or relief from a personal home catastrophe.

Each student must apply online, provide an unofficial transcript and, when applicable, a vendor invoice.

An Emergency Assistance Fund has been established for each of HACC’s five campuses and Virtual Learning. A campus Emergency Assistance Fund committee, comprised of a campus leader, a representative from financial aid and a representative from student affairs, reviews the applications.

Emergency Assistance Funds have helped empower students to achieve their educational goals. An award of $500 can pay for two weeks of emergency childcare; cover textbooks or supplies for two courses; pay for automotive repairs for a student facing a transportation challenge; or replace a student’s program-required uniforms, shoes and supplies destroyed in a fire or flood.

The following are real-life examples of students whose lives were changed by Emergency Assistance Fund awards:

·         A nursing student and her 11 children (nine still living at home and two enrolled in college) relied on the support of her husband, the family’s sole provider. Her education had been an added strain on the family’s already stretched finances. An award from the Emergency Assistance Fund allowed the student to pay for day care for her youngest child so that she could remain enrolled at HACC.

·         A surgical technology student and her family suddenly found themselves without a renewed housing lease. An award from the Emergency Assistance Funds allowed the family to pay for the last month’s rent so they could put their paycheck toward a new home. This lifted the financial burden the family faced so the student could focus on her studies and complete the semester.

·         A nursing student needed to buy a car to ensure that she could continue with her clinicals. Without a vehicle, she feared that she would not be able complete her education at HACC. She described the award from HACC’s Emergency Assistance Funds as a life-changing event for her and her children. Without the stress of a significant financial strain, she was able to focus on her studies and get to work.

·         A biology student needed to repair her vehicle and pay college fees. Without the support of HACC’s Emergency Assistance Funds, she would have had to drop out for the semester and would not have been able to return for at least a year. Her daughter relied on her for transportation to college, so this assistance had an impact on two HACC students!

Your gift would help propel HACC toward its goal of raising $500,000 for its Emergency Assistance Funds and change the lives of students in need. By achieving our goal of $500,000 to support Emergency Assistance Funds, we will be able to assist approximately 1,000 additional students who experience emergency situations.

With your financial support, HACC can provide emergency funding for students who face unexpected barriers to their continued enrollment at HACC. Helping students manage financial emergencies will help them thrive in their academic studies and improve their success rates.
