HELP US PREVENT TROPHY HUNTING OF YELLOWSTONE AREA GRIZZLY BEARS.

>>Updates at bottom

The US Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed removing the grizzly bears of the Yellowstone ecosystem from the Endangered Species List, a process known as delisting.

Delisting equals trophy hunting.

Once they are delisted, authority to "manage" the bears reverts to the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho - the same anti-predator states that "managed" them to near extinction which led to their being added to the List in the first place.

Even as you read this those states are putting rules and regulations in place that will allow grizzlies to be hunted for the first time in 40 years.

While the bears within national park boundaries are protected and always will be, a majority of park bears cross the park boundaries into areas where they will be targeted by trophy hunters. These bears include well known bears such as Grizzly 399.

Bears are already dying in record numbers.

The Yellowstone population has been steady for a decade but declined last year from 757 bears to 717 and that's before including last year's record 61 known or probable grizzly deaths in the Yellowstone area. Do we really want to add another way for them to die?

What are we doing to prevent trophy hunting?

Wyoming Wildlife Advocates along with other grassroots organizations are working hard to prevent the delisting of Yellowstone area grizzlies and the inevitable trophy hunt that will follow but its an uphill battle. The special interests that want grizzlies hunted have huge influence over state and federal governments and the conservation community is largely marginalized as a result.

So we are taking our case directly to the 4 million people who will visit Yellowstone National Park this year by purchasing billboard space on the most popular routes to the park.

The Billboards.

The picture above is the billboard put up June 14th near Bozeman, MT, one of the gateways to the park.

We have designed and contracted for 5 billboards that will be viewed by at least 2,000,000 people between now and October...if we can keep them funded.

All 5 billboards will have the same red and black design which ties in to the branding used by us and other grassroots groups involved in advocating for Yellowstone area grizzlies.

The Website.

The billboards direct people to GrizzlyDelisting.com which has been set up as an informational hub for people to learn about the delisting and trophy hunting of grizzlies.

What we are asking from you.

No surpise, billboards are expensive! It is beyond our limited budget to keep 5 billboards up through the tourist season. Total cost for 5 billboards for 5 months will be about $13,000. We'd be thrilled to raise half that amount. Any amount you contribute is welcome.

All funds up to the target amount will be used to fund these billboards. Any funds received above and beyond will be used to design, purchase and distribute additional marketing materials that directly support this campaign.

THANK YOU!!!

We will be grateful for any financial help you can give us to make this campaign a success, and if the bears could talk, they'd thank you, too!

UPDATE #1

Tragic news:  Grizzly 399's cub, known by many as Snowy or Spirit, was struck and killed by a hit and run driver at Pilgrim Creek at dawn this morning. It is a very sad day.

Even in the sanctuary of Grand Teton National Park it is dangerous to be a bear. Grizzlies are killed by humans, either accidentally or intentionally, at a horrific rate. Some 80% of known mortalities of the bears come at the hands of humans.

Too many grizzlies are dying at the hands of humans - how can we add trophy hunting to the ways we kill grizzlies? It is absolutely unconscionable.
