Greg's Memory care transition

Donation protected
Hi friends and family,

We know some of you have tried to reach out to Greg and Heather Barton via Facebook, phone calls, emails, etc over the past year. We are at a point where we believe it is our responsibility to inform and share with you all as to what is going on.

Last fall, Greg was officially diagnosed with Alzheimer's. It has progressed rapidly, to the point that he no longer can use a phone or computer. While he understands some directions and conversation, getting speech out is a huge struggle.  Greg is doing remarkably well physically. He has lost a significant amount of weight and doctors are aware. This has caused Heather to become a full time caregiver.  Greg is at a point where he is not able to be left alone on his own. He is needing more support and services than what we are able to offer him.

A few months ago Heather was informed she had to have an emergency cornea transplant to save her vision in one of her eyes. The transplant required around the clock care post-surgery.  We learned that the transplant did not take, so she had to have another cornea transplant on August 30th.  At this point, the surgeon is hoping this 2nd transplant will prevent infection, pain in the future, and to simply save that particular eye. With that being said, our mom is at a point where she needs assistance herself, and in caring for Greg because of her own challenges.   She is extremely private and has not wanted to be Public about many of these things.

The siblings have been working through the challenges of this situation with the both of them over the last year. We have come together, and tried our best to support them by providing them with meals, taking them to appointments and games, driving them around, administering medications, having them stay with us, providing financial assistance, and trying to make sure their daily needs and medical needs are being met. We have come to the conclusion that they need additional support and care than what we are able to offer them anymore. It's time to downsize! We have been in contact with an amazing independent living facility in Beaverton that we believe will meet their individual needs and keep them near family and friends. It is called Edgewood Downs. We can get Mom and Dad into the facility this month, However, the initial financial commitments and accommodations required for this process are substantial, and most of our parent’s financial resources will come from the sale of their house. . We need to provide the first 3 months rent, which comes out to $9,450.00 ($3,150.00 per month). We are asking for some financial assistance up front, in helping my parents with this initial transition.  Once we have transitioned our parents to the facility and sold the house, the plan is for the siblings to share in the financial commitments for our parents, and their future at the independent/assisted living facility.

Dad's greatest joy was coaching over the years. Our entire family has been so blessed by the families we have met through his endeavors. Once settled, they would love visitors. Greg loves to be taken out for pancakes or to watch a sporting event. They both love getting out to musicals.

If you are able to make a contribution to help with this initial transition for our parents, we would be extremely grateful. If you are unable to, please consider sharing this post. If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to any of the siblings via Facebook.

Thank you
