Doug and Amy Strong were married in December of 1988, they met while attending Cornell College. Amy was Doug's Resident Assistant (RA) while living in the dorms. Doug and Amy have two wonderful children, Charles (19) and Lizzie (15).
In April of 2015, Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was later discovered that she had three different types of cancer in both breasts.
On June 24, 2015 (Lizzie's 12th birthday) Amy had her first surgery; a double mastectomy. Amy had more surgeries, reconstruction, and radiation in 2015 and 2016.
As fall 2016 approached, things were looking good for Amy. Yet, she began to feel numbness and pain in her hands by Christmas of 2016 and was admitted to the ER with severe abdominal pain on February 20th, 2017. At this time, Amy was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
Throughout 2017 Amy has been close to death 3 times while she suffered from bronchitis, pneumonia and liver failure. Amy is likely the one person with the longest continual stay record at the Cancer Treatment Centers in Zion, IL.
Currently, Amy is fighting for her life as her lungs are filling with blood and she is having difficulty breathing. Amy is presently on a ventilator while receiving medication. Amy is not suffering as she is receiving effective painkillers and sedatives. The Strong family is praying for Amy.
Many family members and friends have asked how they can support The Strong Family during this incredibly difficult time. Money raised by "gofundme" will help to assist with the mounting medical bills along with the other hidden costs related to cancer such as gas needed for trips to the hospital, meals, home care, and other costs associated with the sadness of Amy's illness.
