10/21/16 Update

the 4 boys are all approaching their heartworm injection phase of the treatment.

from Buck and Jack's foster mom:

Jack and Buck have made HUGE HUGE STRIDES. I get teary eyed when I look at them now. When I first brought them home they were counter surfing, scared, anxious, uncomfortable, poop monsters. They now KNOW the comfort and love of a family. I know they do, and we can see it in their eyes every morning we see them, every time we come home from work, and ever lazy Sunday when they are spending their days lounging.

Both dogs came with skin infections, ear infections, and heartworm. This was after being treated for multiple parasites in the shelter after being rescued. They both just finished 3 weeks of antibiotics. Jack is also having some complications w/ his surgery incision from when he was neutered. We are covering what we can as we do have 2 labs, a cat, and two horses. We have covered their booster shots (lyme and distemper) - all heartworm preventative, flea and tick meds (which are heavy in our wooded area) , and of course their food and toys. We are trying our best to contribute to their heartworm treatme

nt as well, so we are praying for more funding on the gofundme page.

From Ben's foster mom:

Ben is doing great. He is loving active and gets along great with my other dogs. He is learning to play with my dogs and dog toys. He is learning indoor and outdoor manners and is house broken, loves his crate and will make someone a fast friend! He is done with his antibiotics and goes for his first heart worm shot next week. He is gaining weight and loves to be groomed. A typical high energy younger than 7 acting English setter.

The Florida Five now the Florida Four!

update 10/11/16:

We havea  super update for everyone! Bernadette's (one of the Florida Five) foster home has officially adopted her and are taking on her heartworm treament and recovery themselves!

We still have four setters in our care from the FL hoarding situation going through their heartworm treatment and recovery. The total fund amount has been lowered to $4,000.00 from the orginal $5,000.00 to reflect the fact that Miss Bernadette is forever home with a family who is covering her treatment and recovery expense. We are so happy for Miss B. to have landed in her forever home!

We want you to think about a hoarding situation that involves 17 dogs (all various hunting breeds). These pups have never have known the love of a forever home. Never slept indoors, never had the opportunity to cuddle up on the sofa. All they knew was living in a crate outdoors, all the time! Add in living in a climate where 6 months out of the year there are torrential downpours every single day and the real feel temperature is about 104. Then I want you to think about what those rains bring, that’s right mosquitos! Big ones, big ones loaded with the stuff that nightmares are made of! The owner didn’t have enough money to care for them properly – no vaccines to protect them from rabies, distemper, and kennel cough, they’ve never been treated for parasites let alone given medications to protect them from rabies, fleas, ticks and heartworm disease. Even basic care isn’t given, if they were lucky there would be enough food to feed them every other day. . .right. it’s Wednesday. . .so no eating today.

Suddenly, the owner died! Then there was no one to give them any care at all. The LaBelle Humane Society stepped in and took up the fight for the wellbeing of all 17 dogs! Thank goodness for the Humane Society that has developed relationships with breed specific rescues. Because 5 of the 17 dogs were English Setters, Above & Beyond English Setter Rescue was contacted.

The rush was on to find fosters and arrange transport for Bernadette, Jack, Ben (formerly Boone), Birch (formerly Butch) and Buck.

All five dogs have heartworms! Did you know that with prep and treatment it can cost $1000 per dog to rid them of these nasty worms. If left untreated, these dogs would have eventually died from the heartworms. (This cost does not include getting them up to date on their vaccines and addressing any other issues they may have.) In addition to the lack of veterinary care and vaccines, Bernadette was found to have an injury to one of her eyes surrounded by massive infection. She’s had the eye removed and is on the mend now but had that been left as it was, that infection could have been the end of her. Jack is also missing an eye from what we can assume was a previous injury.

Despite the disease and neglect, every single transporter, and their foster homes, have told us that all these dogs are loving and sweet. They loved the attention they got along their journey, and love the attention in their foster homes. Today, all the dogs  are with their fosters and have started on the road back to health and have begun heartworm treatment.

Please consider donating toward the rehabilitation of these wonderful dogs. We are a totally volunteer run 501c3 nonprofit and All funds raised will directly go to the care of the Florida Five in their heartworm treatment and recovery.
