Flat Shoals ES goes to Washington

To our Esteemed Contributors:

This quarter the fifth grade Social Studies classes at Flat Shoals Elementary School will study the history of the United States from the Civil War to the present.   Our students are extremely motivated to begin work on this content rich unit and are eagerly looking forward to the possibility of taking an educational tour of important historic sites in Washington, D.C. as the End of the Year Fifth Grade Celebration Trip.  There is, however, one problem that might prevent our students from reaping the enrichment benefits that such a rewarding educational experience would afford them—ECONOMICS!

Flat Shoals Elementary School, located in the southern end of the DeKalb County School System, is classified as a Title One school.  Schools with this designation have student populations which are considered “at risk” because they come from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The majority of our students are products of single parent households.   All of the 600 students in the Flat Shoals attendance area participate in the Federal Breakfast and Lunch Program.  Many have never traveled outside of the state of Georgia, and most have had limited exposure to Atlanta’s wide array of cultural offerings.   In spite of these socio-economic challenges, our students are optimistic, goal-oriented learners, who aspire to become stakeholders of the American dream.  A class trip to Washington, D.C. to witness, firsthand, the things they are studying in Social Studies would be a monumental experience indelibly imprinted in their memories.

The administrative team, faculty and staff, and P.T.A. of Flat Shoals Elementary School are sincerely committed to making the Washington, D.C. trip a goal realized.  Currently, we are diligently engaged in several fundraising enterprises for which we are seeking sponsorship from local businesses, public service and community organizations, and private donors.   The late Rosa Parks once stated, “I believe that we are here on the planet Earth to live, to grow, and to do what we can to make this a better place for all people to enjoy freedom.”  There is no question that you also embrace this thinking.  Your long history of dedicated service to the improvement of the human condition proves this.    We would be sincerely gratified if you would join us in making this educational vision a reality for our fifth graders.  Together, as a village of supporters, we can all make a difference in the lives of these young students.

Thank you, in advance, for your kind consideration in this matter.
