Education for Salone Students

The Friends of Sierra Leone needs your help to support primary school children in Sierra Leone, West Africa. The goal of this GoFundMe is to construct a primary school in the Masamapinde Community, which is a remote village in Kambia District, Sierra Leone.

Currently, as you can see from the pictures, the primary school is in very poor condition. The structure is made up of sticks, coconut leaves, tarps, and random rice bags. There are 55 boys and 30 girls who attend school in this poorly constructed hut. Regardless of the school's condition, students continue to go to school because they know the importance of education. This school was established by the community to serve Class I, II, and III students (which are 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders) because the nearest primary school was located more than two miles from their village, a distance they considered too far for their younger children to walk, especially in the rainy season with its dangerous conditions and in the dry season with its intense heat.

The funds raised through GoFundMe will help pay for corrugated iron sheet, rods, nails, sand and cement bags for pillars and beams. The community is expected to provide the local materials including manpower and mud bricks to put the structure up. This community project will be led by the Project Coordinator Abdul P S Kamara, Treasurer Sallamatu Kargbo, and Community Member Sieh Samura.


Friends of Sierra Leone is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 by a small group of returned Peace Corps Volunteers, soon joined by their Sierra Leonean friends and other volunteers who had served in Sierra Leone. This organization raises funds to support projects throughout Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Note: Any funds received after the goal of $1275 is reached will go into the Friends of Sierra Leone's Project Fund to help fund other projects in the future.
