Our Gardens Grow Thirsty
The Master Gardener Association of Tippecanoe County (MGATC) is an integral part of the Tippecanoe County Cooperative Extension Service. With more than 200 members, the MGATC provides Tippecanoe County citzens a framework to increase their knowledge on a wide variety of horticultural subjects and techniques. You can't go more than a couple miles in the Greater Lafayette area without coming across one of the more than 30 Master Gardener projects, which includes 3 community gardens with 225 plots.
The most notable of our projects is the Tippecanoe County Extension Garden. This 3.5 acre plot includes a variety of gardens such as the children's garden, the vegetable demonstration garden, the pollinator garden, the display & ideas garden, the accessibilty gardens, and 150 community garden plots. These gardens are open to the public and guided tours are available upon request. Besides providing educational opportunities for people of all ages, these gardens donate an average of 9,000 pounds of fresh vegetables annually to local soup kitchens and food pantries. Due to irrigation problems and plant diseases, overall yields were down to 6,000 pounds in 2016.
Above photo is from 2012. Our gardens have evolved quite a bit even in the last 4 years.
And now we have outgrown our irrigation system... The current irrigation system was installed 10 years ago when there was less than an acre under production. We must replace, repair, and upgrade to continue! To do this, we are asking for support from community members like you. Please consider donating to keep us growing into 2017 and beyond! Every dollar adds up...
Budget includes:
$600 - water main tap
$6,940 - water meter installation
$5,000 - trenching new main line
$4,910 - below-ground irrigation materials
$5,400 - installation
$1,750 - above-ground irrigation materials
