Send the Pride to Basketball Camp!

Serving the student-athletes of five separate East Harlem high schools - including Park East High School, Central Park East High School, The Heritage School, Frederick Douglass Academy II, and The Coalition School for Social Change - the East Harlem Pride  athletic program has emerged as one of New York City's elite athletic programs despite the many challenges it faces on a day-to-day basis.

The boys basketball team, in particular, has had an incredible run since the program's inception in 2008, reaching the playoffs in each of the past six seasons and serving as a model of success for the rest of the program. As a coach of this team for the past five years, I've witnessed firsthand the level of hard work and dedication from this talented group of young men as they aspire to consistently improve both on and off the court.

This season, the Pride showed tremendous growth and promise, finishing 12-4 and participating for the first time in the Manhattan Borough Championships. With the season over and the summer upon us, the team is hungrier than ever for the upcoming season and wants to make a name for themselves in the New York City Public Schools Athletic League.

One opportunity that the team hopes to take advantage of is the chance to participate in the Greg Koubek Basketball Camp, an overnight camp in Brant Lake, NY that was started by the former captain of the NCAA Champion Duke Blue Devils. I've had the pleasure of being a counselor at Koubek Camp for the past 6 years, and each time that I've brought my players along, other coaches and counselors have marveled at their hard work and pleasant demeanors. The camp has been instrumental in getting players much-needed exposure to college coaches, and some former campers from our program have even ended up being counselors themselves.

The Pride has always lived by the motto of "Do more with less," and unfortunately the program simply does not have enough funds to send the bulk of the team to camp - even at a reduced rate of $450 per player. That being said, six of our returners will be working over the summer to raise $200 each to contribute towards camp fees, and are hoping to enlist your help in reaching their ultimate goal. $1575 will be enough to send six returning players to the camp, and will cover the cost of transportation to and from the camp (thank God for Amtrak!).

Damarco, Demani, Moyagabi, Elvin, Esmir and Terrel are all hustling to make Koubek Camp a reality, and would greatly appreciate any additional support. Whether it's $1 or $100, any amount helps!

Thank you in advance for your generosity and support, and GO PRIDE.
