Barb Planek (Duchess) Funeral Costs

My name is Kirby White, and the woman you see in the photo is my best friend and musical partner Barbara Planek, aka the Duchess DeSade. Barb passed away from a brief illness which overwhelmed her system on July 27, 2016, shortly after her 53rd birthday. In her too brief life she conquered unimaginable adversity and still emerged with a fierce spirit, a burning intelligence, and a natural instinct for counseling those who needed a compassionate ear.
There are so many people that are mourning her loss. Many were impacted by her amazing performances in our band, Duchess DeSade. Barb's incredible voice was so powerful she barely needed a microphone, and she never let her wicked humor and sexy performnces overwhelm her serious messages of gender equality, sexual freedom and LGBT rights. She is also well loved for her advocacy work in Downtown Los Angeles, which took her from the Mayor's office in City Hall to Sacramento, where she lobbied on behalf of the homeless. Though she had a history of health problems, Barb always worked hard to achieve her goals, most recently as a student pursuing a music degree at LACC. More importantly, everyone knew she was also a mother. Theresa Holliday has inherited Barb's beauty and gorgeous voice, as well as her mother's intelligence.
When Barb passed away she was on the verge of homelessness. Her daughter Theresa had to pay for her mother's funeral expenses and outstanding bills from her freelance income, and she's lost weeks of work. She needs as much help as we can give her before the bills come due again. If everybody that loves Barb gives just a few dollars, we can pull Theresa out from under this unexpected debt. To everyone who donates I will send a photo of Barb and I from our Duchess DeSade days, signed by my hand and Barb's loving spirit.
