Donny - Alley Cats and Kittens

Hello lovely people….. well we at Alley Cats and Kittens, based in Southport and the surrounding areas, start the new year with a heartbreaking story and one which has had our team in pieces. We hope , with your help, we can give a future to a lovely energetic little soul called Donny.
Donny and his siblings were found in September 2016 without a mother on the site of an abandoned fairground. They were too young to survive alove and so russhed to an expert fosterer for handrearing…sadly all of Donny’s siblings passed away. The cause is still unknown. But our Donny kept fighting. He never gave up and neither did we. Which is why we cannot give up on him now.
Donny was always happy, a pleasure to have according to his foster mum Belinda. As Donny grew it became apparent that he had problems with his willy. To us lay people, it dripped after he weed. A urine sample was taken by holding a slide under Donny when he weed and showed that he had crystals in his urine indicative of a Urinary Tract Infection. He was put on a special veterinary diet in the hope of breaking down the crystals and fixing the problem. Herein lies the issue: Donny was taken in for castration with a view to taking a further urine sample to see if the diet was working and whilst under sedation it was discovered that the poor little mite has such a small opening at the end of his penis that he has to have a full bladder in order to wee….then pressure is high enough to force some out though not to empty his bladder, and drips! ( we’ve have been told it’s like a cow being milked ) This is a rare problem. This is a problem we cannot leave untreated. This is also a very expensive problem to fix. But that’s not all: We are in a chicken and egg situation as we won’t know if he will always have to be on the special diet for potential UTI issues until the operation has been done. Did a congenital issue with his urethra cause the crystals or the other way round? So we don’t know if the operatin will fix all of Donny’s problems or just the critical one.
There is a possible operation called a perineal urethostomy, this is an operation that involves creating a new opening for Donny to urinate through bypassing the normal flow direction through the urethra. We suspect he hasn’t developed a normal urethra has he has grown.
A specialist vet has been called in. If the operation goes ahead it will be the smallest she has ever seen. She is concerned as to why Donny is like this in the first place especially given the loss of his siblings therefore she needs to do her own detailed work up on this before any operation. This, she has agreed to do at cost for us.
IF ulterior signs are found that cannot be treated then obviously we could not go ahead with the operation but IF the surgeon agrees with the vet's prognosis then an operation could give him the future and life this little chap so desparately deserves.
The alternative is that we put Donny to sleep on the grounds that we cannot afford to fix him. We cannot leave him like this as the danger is he will soon become unable to urinate at all.
Then we looked at him.. Whilst he was sedated the vet opened his penis hole slightly to ease the pressure on him….that must have been sore? No straight after the op Donny was wanting to play. An absolute testament to the strength of character of this little soul.
Here is the killer point: Donnys operation could cost £2000. With vets bills already hitting an average of £900 per week we cannot do this through normal funds.
We need your help.
We are happy to answer any questions as this is a complex case full of “what ifs”. Check us out on Facebook 'Alley Cats and Kittens' for more information of what we do. All we do know is that we really want to give this chap the chance he so desperately wants..
As always in our appeals every single penny goes to the cats…we are all volunteers who do not claim anything. Should money be raised and Donny not be cured then with permission from donators the fund would go to the other cats in our care. We sincerely hope this will not be the case. This little chap captures the hearts of everyone who meets him. The tears have flowed…help us turn them to tears of joy…

Kindest Regards from The Admin Team
and many Head Bumps from Donny.
