The Masseys Fight Against Cancer

Donation protected

Dear family and friends, firstly we want to say we are so grateful for your support during this incredibly difficult time. We've been overwhelmed by your love and acts of kindness and cannot begin to thank you all enough.

We will be celebrating Michael's life on Friday and would love you to come and join in celebrating him with us. Many have asked how they can best offer support or assistance. We will have a 'Wishing Well' on the Friday for the family and any gift given by those in attendance, big or small, will go towards supporting Jasmine and the children in coming days.

Michael's greatest pride and joy was his family and we know that any contribution on the day to the 'Wishing Well' for his loved ones will be warmly received and valued.

Thanks again.

Apologies to everyone for it being so long since my last update. I spent some time with Michael over New Years and received the update below from his wife Jasmine:

The day before Christmas Eve we went in for a routine oncologist check up. I was nervous because although Michael was home from hospital, it wasn't because he was better.
Michael has become resistant to the chemo he has been on this year and was meant to start a new set of chemo drugs as soon as we got back but got delayed to him being sick.

His oncologist unfortunately put a big weight on all of us over the Christmas period. Although Michael has just started and will continue with the new chemo, he said most people with Michael's kind of cancer won't respond to a second lot of new drugs. He also said that this is the last option for him and is getting us in touch with palative care.

Michael's liver is also failing badly with two massive lesions wreaking havoc on it. He finds it extremely difficult to even walk most days, is in extreme pain and has to take multiple painkillers which makes him fatigued and dizzy most of the time. He is barely eating and losing a lot of weight. In the last two months he has dropped to 76kg from 97.

The doctors have said that there is not a lot that can be done but we are hoping they are wrong and he is fighting hard to beat this.

I only ask to please please continue to pray/hope/keep postitive for Michael. For the doctors to be proven wrong! I'm not the best at staying positive but it helps if everyone else is.

We are shattered and trying our best to enjoy every day we get together as a family.

Thank you to all our amazing friends and family for all your support and help through this. We appreciate you all so very much!

I am writing this as a plea for your help, to assist my best friend Michael and his family in their battle against cancer.

Recently at the age of only 31, Michael Massey was diagnosed with an aggressive, incurable form of cancer. The diagnosis came after only two weeks of abdominal pain and was a complete shock to Michael and his family. He is the father of 4 gorgeous children; Katelyn, Layla, Alba-Rose and Oliver ages 8, 4, 3 and 1 and husband to his beautiful wife Jasmine.
Between the 1st of March and the 30th of April, Michael has lost 30kg – almost a third of his total weight, and he has only just completed his first cycle of treatment. His need for pain relief is constant, rendering him unable to work and leaving his wife to care for both him and their young children. Their youngest girl, Alba, has also been heartbreakingly diagnosed with Global Development Delay and Sensory Processing Disorder - adding further to their list of specialist appointments and financial burdens.

Having lived a healthy lifestyle absent of both alcohol and tobacco, doctors say the chances of Michael contracting this form of cancer were as low as 0.00002%.

I met Michael in 2007 when I was only 14. Soon after, my father was hospitalised after experiencing a catastrophic brain haemorrhage. Doctors told us there was almost 0% chance he would ever leave his hospital bed, let alone recover. Although I had not known Michael long, he offered to help me wherever possible – often assisting me with food and bills I had no means to pay. This was a natural reaction from Michael and never has he considered those favours as needing repayment.

Ten years later, my father has experienced an almost complete recovery. I wish nothing but the same for Michael, and I can only hope to repay that same kindness and generosity he has always shown me.

I need your help in doing this, and I personally appreciate every dollar you can donate to his cause.

Michael is a kind, generous, strong man who refuses to give up hope. Despite there being little chance of recovery, he has begun chemotherapy and is looking into all available methods of treatment. He is motivated constantly by the love and support he receives from his friends and family. He cares for and spends time with his children as much as possible, and stays positive in the hope he will beat the battle with this very rare cancer.

Cancer treatment is expensive, and his need for assistance great. All money received will go towards assisting his young wife, Jasmine, and their 4 young children maintain a form of normal lifestyle while they assist and support Michael on the long journey towards defeating his cancer.
