Dollars for Devin

Donation protected
Hello Wilmette Community, Family & Friends! We are Devin's teachers at Harper School and have started this page on behalf of Devin and his family.

Devin is 7-years-old in 2nd grade at Harper Elementary School.  He was recently diagnosed with a brainstem glioma-tumor. So far, the tumor has caused severe headaches, dizziness and partial facial paralysis. The treatment required will involve a year of weekly chemotherapy.

As Devin prepares to start chemo, we are asking others to support his family financially. The medical bills have been, and will continue to be, enormous and any help will make this journey that much easier for his family.

A BIG thank you from all of Devin's family for anyone who has prayed for them during this time. Your prayers, thoughts, positive outlooks and support have not gone unnoticed. It is a combination of medical science and ALL of YOU that have gotten Devin to where he is today.

Devin’s Story:
Devin was born on August 15, 2008 at 9:04 pm, a beautiful baby boy. Born with Neurofibromitosis 1, a disorder in which nerve tissue tumors form in the skin, brain and spinal cord,  Devin received early childhood interventions from the beginning.

Devin has been a trooper, loving every therapist he ever encountered. Giving his all at every physical, occupational, and speech therapy session, in addition to school and the therapies he received there. Devin  always smiles, gives his best, and never complains.

Devin is not only  enthusastic in school and therapy but he is a wonderful big brother to his 6-year-old sister Ella. They are each other's best friend. Devin keeps an eye out for his sister, and Ella challenges and encourages Devin to go that extra step in so many activities. If Ella is being disciplined, it is Devin who comes to request it be dismissed, even if the offense is against him.  As Devin left the hospital following his last admission, he rolled past the gift shop in the wheelchair,  and was quick to shout, "We have to stop and get something for Ella!"

Sibling love

Due to Devin's medical needs, Rosa Sanchez, Devin's mother, changed her career and currently works as a part-time hospice nurse.  This allows her the flexibity that is needed to be 100% involved with the many doctors appointments and treatments.

While Devin was in the hospital, the tumor and treatment were explained to him in terms he could understand. He was very upset, not because of the tumor or treatment, but because he would be missing school on Thursdays for chemo.

According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 300-400 pediatric brain stem tumors are diagnosed each year in the United States.  Side effects that Devin is currently experiencing from the tumor include extreme headaches, nausea, loss of balance, and dizziness to the point where he cannot stand.

Again, thank you so much for your contributions on behalf of Devin and his family.
