Six months ago, my Dad passed away from terminal esophageal and liver cancer. Throughout his battle, he fought with incredibly inspiring courage and positivity. When he passed away, I promised myself that I was going to continue that courage and positivity in his honor. This is why I started “Do It For Dondo” (Dad’s nickname) with four of my good friends.
We’ve all entered the Queen City Half Marathon in Regina, SK on September 13th and are raising money for the Allan Blair Cancer Center in Regina. We have a goal of raising $1,055 ($10 for every KM one of us runs) to thank the Allan Blair Cancer Center for their amazing care of Dad during his battle.
But Do It For Dondo has a purpose larger than just a fundraiser – finding the sunlight in a cloudy day and making a positive out of a negative situation. I’ve never ran a half marathon before but I think it’s a good metaphor for the decision you are forced to make when dealing with loss. When pushed to your breaking point, you can drown in your sadness, admit defeat and give up… or you can push through, fight and overpower your grief one step at a time.
