Helping Hand For Disabled Friend

Due to no fault of her own, my friend is homeless.

Its hard to believe that this campaign is now more than half a decade old! It was started in December 2016 in the hopes of averting what has happened. It never reached the original goal back when it was first created, so Chrysta was never able to get her RV working.

This campaign has moved much more slowly than we originally had hoped. The previous goals and original story are stated below. The current goal is ongoing survival assistance which includes fuel and maintenance of her van, which is where she must live and sleep part of the time when "couch surfing" is not an option. Secondly, this campaign makes it possible to maintain storage expenses. Her RV sits in storage but is still useful as a place to rest, bathe and store things. Below you will see the original hope of this campaign. The cost to make her RV road worthy would be prohibitive and there are no viable options for living in it locally, in a way that she can afford or could get assistance with from social services.

The situation:

Due to no fault of her own, she is homeless. She was forced to vacate her last home as of April 1st, 2017 due to financial inability to keep it, and since then has stayed with various people, including most recently the 100 year old lady she was caregiver to (in exchange for room and board), but on the night of January 13, 2018, her lady passed away. Since leaving that house, she has been staying either in her van or in a "hobo tent" in a warehouse (there is a public bathroom that she has access to). 

This situation is made even more difficult by the fact that she is disabled and has many special needs. Chrysta suffers from several auto-immune conditions, MS related heat intolerance, environmental/chemical sensitivities, as well as having high functioning autism/Aspergers. Because of her conditions, it is critically important that due to chemical sensitivity and allergies, she avoid exposures to tobacco smoke, incense, mold, mildew, chemical treatments, perfumes, chemical cleaners and products like Febreeze and any scented laundry products. She also requires use of a scooter part of the time.

Many people ask, "but doesn't she qualify for aid and assistance?". Yes, to a point. However, finding suitable housing for her is difficult due to her disabilities and special needs. Rents are higher than Section 8 allowances, leaving people like her responsible for making up the difference in rent and for paying other bills. In government housing, waiting lists are very long. For many well-thought-out reasons, she wants to live as cheaply and as independently as possible. 

In autumn of 2017, she was able to acquire a 1979 vintage Class C camper vehicle that has the basics - a small shower stall, sink, bathroom, stove, bed, and small fridge.  If it can be made to work, it will provide her a scent free/chemical free environment to live in with all the basics of home. It's essentially a “tiny house”. She would need to find a space to rent to place it on. It is currently unplated and in storage where she cannot legally live in it, as per the storage facility's rules. 

Most of the belongings that she’s keeping are in storage. She’s actually given away an incredible amount of her belongings to friends, strangers and charities and will continuing to do that as she thins out the storage places.

Once Chrysta is settled into her new life, she intends to continue to give back with more charity appearances, give-away donations and launching a new youtube channel to document life as a homeless, disabled autistic person, raising awareness and helping other people where possible. 

Some of you may know her as Lady Thor from charity events, others know her as the more exotic Lady Loki who shows up at comic conventions or at Renaissance Faires, while some of you may simply know her as Chrysta, a caregiver to elderly, but regardless of how you know her, my friend is in big trouble and this campaign aims to try to raise funds for her. As her closest friend and sometimes assistant, I’m hoping to help get her situated.
