We pray for Deacon Kurt Maskow and call on St Anthony of Padua, The Great Orator, to intercede in his healing.

Last year, Deacon Kurt, of St Catherine of Siena in Carrollton, TX, reported that he had mouth cancer and would be undergoing surgeries to remove the cancerous tissue.  This included half of his tongue, lymph nodes, and saliva glands.  The two surgeries were completed earlier this year and Deacon Kurt is in severe pain and is healing but will require additional treatment including speech therapy before his healing is completed.

He continues to recover from the two surgeries he had for cancer, and began treatment this week with the head and neck oncologists. He will be having radiation for 6-7 weeks, 5 times a week beginning mid-February. The doctors feel that this will give Deacon Kurt the best chance. He may also still need to go through a course of chemotherapy.  Some of the therapy is very expensive and is not covered by insurance.

Deacon Kurt moved here from the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio, and was instrumental in bringing Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) to St Catherine of Siena.  Kurt brought CRHP to SCS from St. Ann’s in Coppell after he and John Kalchbrenner made a weekend there. In addition to CRHP, Kurt and Sonny Cruz led the food drive together for a while, Kurt has been an RCIA sponsor, Lector, and Eucharistic minister. Kurt and I were circle leaders for Marriage Encounter and sponsor couple for engaged couples for several years. We also taught CCD classes together. Kurt also served on the Board of Directors for the Metrocrest Social Services in the 80’s. Although ill himself, he  focuses on helping those who are suffering with illness and the elderly, and helping with memorials. He is dedicated to helping with the Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrations. Kurt has served SCS pastors Fr. Bob Whitfill, Fr. Richard Weaver, Fr. Tom Craig, Fr. George Thennattil, Fr. Mathew Kavipurayidam, Fr. Augustine Kolapuram, and Fr. Sushil Tudu over a span of 30+ years of volunteering at St. Catherine of Siena beginning after moving to Carrollton in 1981. Fr. Tom Craig encouraged Kurt to explore becoming a Deacon, and Kurt was ordained in 2003 during the time that Fr. George was pastor. Kurt is a faithful 4th degree Knight of Columbus and supports their many causes.

Up until his disease, Deacon Kurt had been supportive of the Knights of Columbus including leading the family rosary at their open meetings on first Monday and after Stations of the Cross during the Lenten seasons.

Please continue to pray for Deacon Kurt and support his family by donating to this fund and relieve his family of the financial burden that they face.

We would again like to thank everyone for their outpouring of cards, good thoughts, prayers, and help financially. We feel very blessed to have so many good friends praying for us.

Today, Kurt is having 9 teeth extracted, mostly molars, to get ready for the radiation treatment. This is necessary as the area for radiation will destroy the ability of the jaw to create new bone. After radiation, it is necessary that the jaw be disturbed as little as possible, like for any future dental work.

Next week, Kurt will be fitted with a cancer mask, which is basically a bust of the head and neck that gets clamped into place during treatment so there is no movement, and they can be very precise on targeting the cancer. This takes about a week to create. Radiation should then begin the last week of February.

May God's healing hand rest upon Kurt! In Jesus name, Amen!

Much Love,
Kurt and Kathy

Kurt and Kathy would like to thank everyone for their generosity in their time of need. May God graciously bless all of you for helping! All the prayers offered, along with the cards, and helping financially - we are so very grateful! We trust in God's goodness and in the healing powers of Jesus!

There has been a stumbling block in that dental clearance for radiation is necessary before beginning treatments. Kurt visited a dentist last week, and he mentioned removing all Kurt's molars prior to treatment. That was overwhelming! In speaking later with the radiation oncologist, he was able to get an appointment into the Oral surgery clinic there, and they will do what is necessary to get that clearance, so it may not have to be all extracted to begin treatment, maybe just 4-5. More teeth may be lost during the treatment anyway. If all goes well and dental clearance is given, the radiation oncologist can begin constructing a mask for the radiation treatments next week.

They also scheduled an appointment with the Chemotherapy oncologist next week to. So it appears Kurt will be going through both Chemotherapy and Radiation treatments simultaneously for 6-7 weeks.

There is an optimum window for all these treatments, and all needs to go smoothly so it is not lost! This will give Kurt the best chance at recovery.

Please continue to pray that treatment goes well, and the grace and peace of God's healing hand rests upon Kurt! In Jesus name, Amen!

Update from Kathy:
"Yesterday we had a bit of a setback. We went to get the dental clearance for radiation, and they recommended that Kurt have all his molars removed before beginning radiation, due to their placement in the path of the radiation to the tongue.

This is major surgery, being knocked out, and around 12 teeth gone! Kurt will probably need dentures after treatment. We have a referral to an oral surgeon at UTSW for evaluation, and scheduling. But what this means is that we will have a bit of delay (couple weeks) in starting radiation therapy. That is a blow!

Happily, after our doctor visits, we were able to briefly stop in to see our Pastor, Fr Sushil at SCS. He gave us a much needed blessing!"
