Darby's medical fees

A little less than two weeks ago I noticed Darby had what appeared to be a bug bite on her back hip. I didn't think much of it at the time. Until 6 days ago when I noticed the once small bump had turned into a scab, I assumed she had scratched it. So I cleaned it. And I cleaned it every day for about four days, each time the scab became bigger and bigger, and hair was falling out. The edges were starting to seep liquid and she was starting to be bothered by it. Today I took Darby to the vet. Clearly the once harmless 'bug bite' was infected. But the biggest concern to our doctor were the 'blood blister' type markings on her stomach. The vet believes them to be skin cancer tumors. And believes the reason the infection is developing and growing at this rapid pace is the result of Darby's immune system struggling to fight the tumors.

Darby is currently on an antibiotic to control the infection on her hip, but ultimately the tumors need to be removed and examined. Even if this infection clears up without proper diagnosis and treatment her immune system will continue to decline. The good news though is if the vet's opinion is correct and it is skin cancer, that once the tumors are removed with clean margins it's over and done with, and no additional treatment is needed.

It's no secret that as a Supervisor at Starbucks I live pay check to pay check, and I don't indulge in much except the occasional bag of twizzlers. The procedure for the removal of all four tumors and testing is estimated at $1250.00. That's $1250.00 that I do not have, at all, anywhere. We go back in two weeks to check the infection, but until I can raise the money we cannot remove and test the tumors.

I've only had Darby for a year and 5 weeks. I do not know much about the life she lived before I found her at BWAR here in Asheville. And I don't know where our life together will take us. I DO know that I wouldn't have lasted here in Asheville without her in my life and the small support group I've acquired here. I also know that I can't picture what will happen to me if I have to live this life without her. A year and 5 weeks is not at all long enough for us to be separated over a few small red marks on her stomach, or a bug bite on her hip.

I know not everyone has had the pleasure and privilege of meeting Darby in person. But EVERYONE who knows me knows how much she means to me. And ANYONE who has loved a dog knows how hard hearing this news and writing this story is. I'm asking for help. I'm asking for anything anyone who is living pay check to pay check can spare. Think of it as buying Darby or myself a beer - we've had a rough day.
