What Happened

On April 24, Danielle fell in a Connecticut parking lot and suffered a Humeral Shaft Fracture; more specifically, her upper arm bone broke into three pieces. She underwent emergency surgery due to the nature of the break. This was not a typical broken arm with two pieces of bone that would line up and fuse together to heal correctly. On April 28, a plate and six bolts were inserted to surgically repair the fracture.

During Danielle’s first post-op visit, it was confirmed that she had radial nerve damage and radial nerve palsy, a risk with this type of fracture at this location. In lay terms, with radial nerve palsy, she can’t lift her fingers or wrist and she cannot grip or hold anything.

On May 12, Danielle underwent a second exploratory surgery to ensure her radial nerve wasn’t entrapped, cut, or severed by fractured bone pieces. The good news is that the radial nerve is not entrapped, but there is some damage and scar tissue.  Due to the trauma and multiple surgeries, Danielle still has a way to go before she can begin therapy.  We pray the nerve returns to full function, though Danielle has been told no one can predict how long this healing will take (possibly 4-12 months) and if it will be restored to 100% use. This is the waiting game and this is why Danielle needs help today.

How You Can Help

As most of us know, Danielle has a lot of pride. This has been a very difficult reality for her to face. She’s a responsible single mom supporting a household and two kids, but she’s now unable to work and drive and has depleted her savings on these unexpected medical costs. She’s fortunate to have family and friends who have been helping with meals and transportation, but based on the best scenario of just four months of recovery, not likely based on her progress in these first six weeks, her copays, deductibles, and medical costs not covered by insurance (including twice weekly acupuncture appointments costing $60.00 each) will total approximately $5,000. This summer, she is scheduled to begin occupational therapy and physical therapy. In October, if she’s not recovered and back to work, Danielle’s income will be reduced by 40% and she may also be facing a third surgery on the radial nerve.

Danielle is the first to rush to everyone’s aid when help is needed. She’s a natural caretaker of her family and friends and is just one of the most generous, faithful, and charitable women. If you can, please join us as we pull together for Danielle as she faces this uncertainty and daunting financial burden.
