Help for Cairn Terrier Jib

Tax deductible
Jib is a sweetheart of a red wheaten boy who we believe to be about 8 years old. He was recently surrendered to Colonel Potter by his owner when circumstances changed at home. While we don’t know the entire story about Jib’s previous life, we do believe his health care may have been neglected for quite some time. A growth on Jib’s groin, initially described as just a small cosmetic fatty tumor, was found to be alarmingly large. This “small growth” was actually the size of an orange. Since he also needed a dental cleaning and vaccinations, Col. Potter took him immediately to a veterinarian to find out what was really going on.
After an examination, the vet believes the soft swelling on Jib’s groin is not a fatty tumor at all, but an inguinal hernia, a condition in which the abdominal contents protrude through the inguinal canal or inguinal ring, an opening which occurs in the muscle wall in the groin area. Most inguinal hernias are uncomplicated, but if contents from the abdominal cavity (such as the bladder, a loop of intestines, etc.) pass through the opening and become entrapped there, the situation can become life-threatening. A hernia can also be quite uncomfortable for the dog. We don’t know how long Jib has lived with this untreated condition, but he is already scheduled for surgery to correct the opening and to replace the contents of his abdomen, if necessary, back into his abdominal cavity.

As the vet examined Jib, he also discovered that our poor pup’s back teeth were so decayed, they must be, as the vet described it, “hanging in there by the skin of his gums.” So while Jib is undergoing surgery for his hernia, he will also receive a dental cleaning that is many years overdue. We expect he may lose several back teeth as a result.

Despite the condition of his untreated hernia and his decayed teeth, both of which must cause Jib discomfort, this little Cairn is one very happy boy. He loves nothing more than to greet his foster family with a happy dance, give them kisses, and follow them around the house and yard to see what’s up. He gets along great with his foster Cairn siblings, an 8-year old female and a rambunctious 2-year old male. He walks very well on his leash and greets other dogs he meets with a friendly sniff or two, but, since he's the curious type, he usually loses interest quickly as he goes off to check out something new he sees. After dinner, he is content to curl up at your feet and then retire to sleep in his crate at bedtime.

The surgery and dental will be expensive, so we appreciate you for helping Jib get some much-needed attention after so long without proper care. After some post-surgery R&R, Jib will be ready to be an affectionate and happy addition to some lucky family.
