Clarice is a spunky, fun-loving, world-traveling, foodie and dedicated elementary Special Education teacher.
On March 19, 2017, our family vacation to Maui was cut short when Clarice experienced slurred speech and numbness on her left side. Doctors diagnosed Clarice with Moyamoya disease, which is the gradual narrowing of the arteries/veins in her brain. The blockages in her brain caused the mini strokes that left her with a loss of mobility in her left arm, weakness in her left leg, and a left side facial droop causing slurred speech. Doctors also found a mass on her C2 spinal vertebrae that ate through most of the bone, pushing up against her spinal cord.
On April 4th, Clarice had spinal surgery to remove the tumor and provide structural support for her C2. This tumor is most likely benign, but could recur and require radiation therapy. After Clarice fully recovers from spinal surgery, she will start her treatment plan for Moyamoya on the West Coast where Neurosurgeons specializing in the disease are located.
