A Little About Us
The Chief Joe Mathias BC Aboriginal Scholarship Fund was established to honour the memory of the late Chief Joe Mathias, a hereditary and elected Chief of the Squamish Nation. The scholarship fund has provided 238 scholarships to 173 students from almost 100 First Nations in BC since its inception in 2002.

Chief Mathias is remembered for his vision and his leadership for the rights of aboriginal people in British Columbia and across Canada. Central to that vision was his passionate belief in and advocacy for higher education for First Nations people. This Scholarship Fund is dedicated to helping realize Joe’s dream of providing post-secondary opportunities for enthusiastic, dedicated and aspiring British Columbia First Nation students to enable them to realize their dreams of becoming leaders of tomorrow in the career of their choosing. There is no more appropriate tribute to the work of Chief Mathias than to witness the success of the young aboriginal graduates and scholarship recipients the fund has helped since it began in 2002. First Nation doctors, businessmen and women, scientists, social workers, engineers, nurses, computer programmers, lawyers, and teachers…these are our future leaders who will continue his legacy and ensure a bright and prosperous future for First Nations citizens and their communities.

The Chief Joe Mathias BC Aboriginal Scholarship Fund needs at least $12,000 in order to give as much money in the form of scholarships and buraries as we have in previous years.  Unfortunately, our investments for the scholarship this past year didn't perform as well as they had in the past due to the unstable economy. We are committed to continuing to provide money to First Nations students so they may continue to pursue higher education. Please help us continue to support FIrst Nations students get the education they deserve by donating to this campaign.

We are a registered non-profit and can provide a charitable donations receipt for donations over $25.

If you would like a receipt for your donation ($25 or more) please send a quick email to [email redacted] that includes your name and mailing address so we can send you a proper tax receipt in a timely manner.

“It’s time now to address the future, it’s time now to move on. To participate in mainstream Canada, to make our own decisions, to have our economy thrive, to be good neighbors with our municipalities, so that our young can grow up to be doctors and lawyers and chartered accountants, and, yes, even the Prime Minister of Canada through proper education. We want access to higher institutions of learning so that our young, that are coming in the future, can make a great contribution to this country; so that we can have an incredible life and so that you, white people, can have an incredible life.” ~ Chief Joe Mathias
