Sewanee Swimming/Diving Trip

My name is Charles Andrew Boclair III, and I would like to be able to join my team, the Sewanee Tigers, to go to winter training.

All my life I have been an athlete. I started around 3 yrs old learning how to golf, thanks to my grandfather. From there it moved to baseball and soccer in high school and I thought I would continue those sports in college, but that turned out not to be the case. Realizing I was in a whole different league I didn't pursue those sports, and focused on my studies. After about 2 months of no sports, or any extra curriculars, I headed to the pool and jumped off the diving boards, just to have some fun, and get my mind off of things. Backflips, front flips, twists and just fun stuff, little did I know that the coach of the diving team was watching, Coach Max.

Before I left he came over, and asked me, "Have you ever done diving before?" I replied, no. He then told me that I look like I have a knack for the board and wanted to know if I would be interesting in diving. I hesitated for a second. He then said, just come to one practice and see if you like it. So I agreed.

The next day,  I arrived, and I didn't know what to expect. Coach Max  greeted me, and wanted to know what I was capable of. So I went to the board and jumped off and did the best thing I could do, a simple back flip, then a front dive, and that was about it. Coach Max said, "You have a lot of potential, and your very athletic, but to be honest... we have a lot of work to do if you want to pursue this." I thought to myself, its a new challenge, and its still being a part of a team. So I replied "This seems like fun, I want to be a part of this Coach."

3 years later I have come very far and have many fond memories of practice and competition. Thanks to the help of my fellow teammates and Coach Max, I would not be the athlete I am today. But there has always been one thing that has not been possible until this year, and that is winter training. Winter training is vital to many swimmers and divers, because it keeps them from falling out of shape during winter break. There is a month off for the holidays, and I have learned that a lot can happen during that time. You can lose, or forget what you have learned off of the boards. A lot of diving, comes down to muscle memory, and going from everyday of practicing, to a month off, has caused problems for me in the past. This is why I want to be able to go to Winter training this year, my final year, with my team.

My accomplishments of my years with the team have definitely been improving. From my first year, finishing in 9th and 7th place in the 1 meter springboard and the 3 meter springboard to 5th place on both boards the very next year, shows that my hard work has paid off. So I know that given this opportunity, I will work even harder, to make sure that I learn and practice all I can over the course of this year, to finish as best as I can against the competition.
