This year (2016), the City of Bridgeport-BOE and the City's Athletic Department were directed to make sweeping budget cuts in significant athletic programs to satisfy mandated budget compliance.
In doing so, the Central High School FENCING Team was reduced to a ZERO budget however, recently allowed to stay functional if it became self-funded.
The Central High School FENCING Team has been in existence for over a decade and has produced a competitive and successful team program that has been admired by many in the state. The Central High School FENCING Team is the ONLY urban, inner-city fencing team in the whole state and in past years, had made its mark on statewide competitive fencing.
Each year, close to 50 students enroll in the Central fencing program. That is 50 young lives positively influenced with a dynamic purpose. No one is turned away, and everyone fences.
This GoFundMe campaign provides the operating dollars for several items that I wish to be totally transparent about.
The $7,000 goal attempting to be achieved satisfies the Coach's stipend, equipment repairs (to aging foils & epees) Uniform dry cleaning, team jackets, and buses and entry fees to two of the major State Championships conducted by the Connecticut High School Fencing Association (CHSFA) held in March at the end of the season.
In addition to this GoFundMe, other corporate contributions are being sought after. Any extra dollars received would go into reserve for next year. This year's Fencing season begins in late November 2016 and ends on March 11, 2017
