Caregiver Campaign For Sheila Potter

#CancerSucks

Cancer hangs a huge black cloud over the lives of everyone it touches. From patients to parents, caregivers, co-workers, family and friends, we all suffer when someone we love is infected. The patients themselves unquestionably have it the worst, but the emotional stress, mental exhaustion and sleepless nights play a predominate role in all our lives. It is however our privilege and honor  as family and friends to stand by Mike’s side and support him in his fight.

My brother is the strongest, most optimistic, confident cat I know and even with the cards stacked against him he strives. Traits we are confident he has inherited from our mother, Sheila. She not only has overcome her own battle with cancer but has also stood by Mike’s side every moment of this process.

Our mom has taken dozens of days off, spent hours upon hours at Loyola Medical Center, continuously makes countless drives from Darien to the Northside to help care for Mike in the comfort of his own home and has without hesitation cashed in every possible vacation day and sick day available to her to ensure she never misses an appointment.

As you are all aware, my brother has entered the next chapter of his cancer journey and will be admitted on Friday for a three week stay in the hospital to receive additional chemo treatments as well as a stem cell transplant. This will take a tremendous toll on his body and once he is released he will be under very strict restrictions which require him to have a care giver 24/7 for the first few weeks home.

Our mom has graciously stepped up and offered to be that 24/7 caregiver alongside Mike’s wife Seirra. With as stubborn as we all know Mike is about “following doctors orders” it will take the teamwork of them both to keep him safe and healthy during those critical weeks at home. Mom is selflessly sacrificing and willingly volunteering to go on unpaid FMLA to help care for Michael .

Although she is asking nothing in return but a long healthy life ahead for her son and daughter in law, we as a family need to be realistic in the potentially devastating financial impact that taking an unpaid leave of absence from work will have on her. That is why we have created this caregiver Go Fund me page for her.

All donations will go directly to our Mom to help her continue to pay her own personal bills such as rent while she is off, but also to cover additional expenses like gas and parking garage fees both at the hospital and Michaels condo building. As many of you know our mom was a single mom who did a stellar job raising us and literally poured every penny she earned into her kids. She has constantly struggled and sacrificed for the sake of her family and now we are asking for your help. Please help give our Mom the peace of mind she needs to focus her attention on caring for her son rather than on bills that will pile up while she is on FMLA.
