Butch and Martha's Journey

Donation protected
Dennis "Butch" and Martha Brown have served together for almost 40 years.  Butch worked as the pastor and Martha served as his faithful partner in churches in Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.  During that time, they have encouraged those around them through their investment of time in their family and friends. All the while, they have each endured some medical hardships.  Each time, Butch and Martha have exhibited the faith and positive attitude of those who rely on the Lord.

Recently, a long term prayer was answered. On December 2, a regular Tuesday afternoon, the Browns got the call from Oschner Hospital in New Orleans that a liver match had been found and that, upon their arrival, Butch would undergo a transplant.   Less than 24 hours later, the family rejoiced when Butch's surgery was complete. During the hospital stay and the subsequent recovery period, Martha has been at his side handling each and every need. The couple has been blessed to be able to stay close to the hospital with Martha's sister until Butch can be released to return home.   Like any recovery period from significant surgery, there has been slow and steady progress. Butch continues to improve and hopes to return soon to serving the people of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Century, Florida.

While tending to Butch, Martha began to experience significant leg pain and muscle spasms.  She was admitted to the hospital after the second trip to the ER.  Blood work revealed that her platelet levels were dangerously low, but the source of the pain remained elusive. She has been given several units of platelets and whole blood but is unable to reach or maintain an appropriate platelet level.  After multiple tests and days of uncertainty of diagnosis, she had a bone marrow biopsy and is awaiting the results.  The doctors will propose a treatment plan once those results arrive.

As as you would expect knowing these two, each partner is worried about the other. Neither worries for his/her own issue, but is constantly questioning the current state of the partner. Just days ago, they were eagerly looking to return home. Butch is closing in on his release from the transplant doctor. Today, questions abound about what tomorrow will hold for Martha. As usual, they are fervently praying for wisdom, strength, and courage to face the day.

You can help them on this part of their journey. Pray for them, their doctors, and their care-givers. Knowing the best plan to take when faced with multiple paths can be daunting. Pray that the right course of action will be evident from the beginning in every situation.  In addition, please consider donating toward the cost of their medical and travel costs. The complexity of their cases and the specialized treatments that were/are necessary will, obviously, accumulate large hospital bills.  The established goal will likely cover only the tip of the iceberg but will provide this couple some relief from the constant weight of that concern.  You can also help by sharing their story with your friends and family.

While they are unsure what awaits them next,Butch and Martha are holding fast to Jesus - "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful" (Hebrews 10:23 NIV).
