Brandeis Operetta Initiative: Gilbert & Sullivan Revival (BOI)
My name is Daniel Albert-Rozenberg and I am working to bring operetta and classical vocal performance back to Brandeis University through the wonderful work of W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. I've been going to see Gilbert and Sullivan performances with my family since I was little and it has always been a dream of mine to put on one of their fabulous shows.
Operetta, also referred to as light opera, is an art form combining song and spoken lines as well as (in the case of Gilbert and Sullivan) action and witty banter. Dating back to the mid 19th century, it was the precursor to the modern musical theater we all know and love. Although these shows are now over 100 years old their messages of political and social criticism still ring true in today's world.
The goals of this initiative are twofold: we want to bring Gilbert and Sullivan back to Brandeis and make it available to the wider community for free. Additionally this program seeks to offer Brandeis students an opportunity at no cost to themselves to work on a musical project with guidance from music faculty and other performance professionals.
Your donations will help pay for subsidies for performers' voice lessons, hiring musicians, and covering production and performance costs that will allow us to make our performances free and open to the general public.
We will be performing Thursday April 27th at 7pm and Saturday April 29th at 1pm in the Slosberg recital hall at Brandeis. I hope to see you there!
