Boricua Care Packages Project

$4,042 of $2,500 goal

Raised by 96 people in 10 months
I wanted to do SOMETHING to help the people of Puerto Rico, but haven't been sure WHO I should donate $ to, or how I could make GOOD USE of my time and skills to ACTUALLY make a difference.

ENTER JOSSIE VALENTIN- A close personal friend of mine with PR roots, excellent community organizing skills, lots of support on social media (she's a POLITICAL SUPERSTAR, Ward 4 Holyoke City Counselor) and a deep commitment to help people...

Quick Summary: She contacted and confirmed mail delivery to several of personal contacts in PR, organized a MASSIVE outreach effort for donations and supplies, put together 80 care packages over the past week, and made several confirmed shipments to PR.

Jossie is setting up another round of care packages NOW, but monetary donations for USPS costs and supplies are NEEDED. PLEASE GIVE WHAT YOU CAN, every little bit counts :)

Contact me directly if you'd like to help by donating your time rather than money.

We need to share this care packages story that we just learned about today with all of you because it is unbelievably heartbreaking and amazing at the same time.

One of our “designated distribution volunteers” in the southern part of the island has been sharing products from the care packages we have sent to her PO box with her community. Her neighbor — who has a newborn — came to her asking for help. The Mom could not produce any more milk to feed the newborn and the baby had consumed the last available bottle of milk she had. They frantically went to every possible store in the nearby towns looking for formula and they could not find any. While they were out looking for this, they stopped at the post office to pick up an additional care package that had come in. They were so focused on trying to find what the baby needed, that they did not open the care package at that moment. It was not until they returned home empty-handed that they decided to open the care package that we sent and they realized that it was filled with baby products, including diapers and formula. They said they couldn’t stop crying when they opened our box. Neither could we when we heard the story.
