Meet BobbleHead Beaux.

Even with his good behavior and impeccable manners, he was dealt a crummy hand, but he's not folding yet.

This little 1 year old has had a rough start to life, evident by his malnourished frame, lack of coat, and swollen and inflamed skin.  We were told he was found in a dumpster and when the finder was going to take him to the shelter, his friend asked to take him instead, knowing Beaux would likely be euthanized, as it was a high-kill shelter and in his condition, could be seen as un-adoptable. After a few days and a costly vet visit, she realized she was in over her head and wanted to get rid of him. Shar Pei are unique in that they require special attention with their health and maintenance care; this is why they're considered an expensive breed. On 9/24, she reached out to a Shar Pei owner in her city, New Orleans, who contacted me, asking for advice and help. Upon seeing photos of this poor boy's condition, we knew we had to jump in and save him, before he ended up on the shelters kill floor. Thankfully, she was more than willing to relinquish Beaux to our care. (Below is the first photo we saw of him, where we immediately knew this was life or death for Beaux.)

After being picked up that evening, he was introduced to other Shar Pei, without an ounce of aggression. With a good meal and an epsom salt soak bath, he was tuckered out, in a temp foster for the evening. Come the morning of 9/25, he had, what was likely, his first morning of freedom and fresh air with a walk at the lake; time for a new life.

At a new Pei savvy vet, he had the human equivalent of a spa day (complete with a pawdicure) totaling a whopping $704.47 that included his exam, vaccinations, lab work, preventatives, medication for his ear and skin, etc. He's heart worm negative, so that's encouraging. (Please see attached invoice; this does not include the vet clinic's boarding fees.)

Internally, Beaux is in fairly good health and everyone at the clinic can't get over how sweet and adoring he is. With all the upheaval in his life, he is experiencing some gastrointestinal upset, but that's to be expected and once he settles into his new routine, his belly should sort itself out. The veterinarian did not feel comfortable scheduling his neuter or entropion surgery until his external inflammation is significantly reduced, which is understandable; this guy has to feel good first.  (Below is an accurate representation of the condition of his skin.)

We still wanted to include estimates for both procedures, so everyone knew where our figures for the goal are coming from. We want to be totally transparent in all of this. All funds donated will go directly to his vet bills; we'll cover the cost of food, toys, activities, etc. If we exceed our goal, I can assure you, any additional funds will go to a Shar Pei Rescue to continue helping other Pei in need. (Please see attached estimates.)

We are not a rescue group, although someday we’d like to be a 501c3, but because of this, there will be no rescue discounts at the vets office, so everything you see is the price we're paying.

Anyways, thank you, immensely for taking the time to read through this and if there's even a dollar you could spare to help this guy start a new life, we'd be beyond grateful. If you can't donate, could you possibly share? The more people we reach, the more likely we can impact Beaux's life.

Once he is healed, healthy, and happy, we will be looking for a Pei-savvy, loving home for him. Again, he's in the New Orleans area, but I'm confident we could coordinate a volunteer transport to get him to his best home, no matter the distance. He's currently in boarding at the vets with round the clock care, but once he’s feeling and looking better, we’ll want to find him a great place.

Pros: Crate Trained, Good with Dogs, Great with People, Loves Cuddles

Cons: Is fussy with ear and oral meds. <3

Pupdate: Well, folks, it’s the day we’ve all been waiting for. BobbleHead Beau (his new family @SiblingsoftheSmush is dropping the classic Big Easy “x”) is currently en route to his furever home in Richmond, VA with the most wonderful peirents who are committed to helping him adjust in his own time. He left the boarding clinic yesterday, after having all sutures from surgeries removed, had a lovely last NOLA sunset with @NolaSharPeiLife’s crew and is officially off to his new life. He’ll arrive tomorrow evening and get to meet his 4 new FurSibs. We couldn’t be more happy and excited for this kid. Thank you, again, everyone, for helping him; you’ve been the absolute best cheering squad!

Please see attached costs (across multiple updates since only 3 can be attached at a time) and what your generous donations went towards. I stated wanting to be completely transparent in all of this, so I’m holding up my end of the bargain.

Pupdate: First and foremost, thank you again, everyone, for your generosity and sharing BobbleHead Beaux’s story! Without you, we couldn’t have dreamed of giving him the comfort he so desperately needs. In the same breath, all appreciation and thanks goes to Kelly and Taylor. Without them, none of this would’ve been peissible; I only helped set up and coordinate his GoFundMe, which is nothing in comparison.

As for Beaux, he is finally showing off his playful peisonality! 3 days ago, when he was introduced to @NolaSharPeiLife and @MollyGrace_SharPei, Molly and Dixie tried to get him to play, but he was having none of it, due to how crummy he was feeling. With all the TLC he’s been receiving, he’s coming around. Rest assured, he’s still a cuddle-monster.

Beaux’s currently getting around the clock care while in boarding at the vet clinic, as he needs several small meals throughout the day, medications at scheduled intervals, and regular medicated baths, all of which is made possible with your donations. Kelly and Taylor are visiting him daily for additional love and attention until he’s ready to skip out of there. The more we continue to raise, the better care we can provide him with. The initial goal was based purely on basic aid, so anything additional is going to ensure his needs not only be met, but exceeded. <3
