Luke C. Moore Academy is an alternative high school located in Northeast Washington, D.C. It serves students 17-20 years old who have dropped out of high school and are seeking a second chance to earn their diploma. The Luke C. Moore Mural Project looks to actively involve students in designing and painting a mural within their school to enhance the building's aesthetics. Such improvements in building condition have been shown to create a more welcoming environment and thus spur more engaged learning from students. Additionally, this project is structured to help students develop a greater connection to their school and community. The mural's theme will focus on the collective identity of the school and the design will incorporate symbols and figures of importance from the surrounding neighborhood. Furthermore, painting a mural offers students a unique lens to learn about the elements of art, design, and painting techniques, as well as explore concepts such as identity. Overall, students will be empowered through art by being entrusted the opportunity to better their school aesthetically, inspire academic growth, and strengthen students' sense of belonging to the school and community.
