My name is Alexandra, and I am a Student at Syracuse University. My 20th birthday is Monday, April 7. When I was little, all of my relatives used to give me money for my birthday to buy things that I wanted instead of getting me presents that I wouldn't like or use. This year, the only thing I want for my birthday is help paying for my summer service trip. This GoFundMe page will help me raise money so that I can help women create small businesses and learn about sexual health in Uganda.
35% of Ugandans live below the poverty line. 8% of the population have AIDS, and there are over 100,000 new HIV infections per year (Epidemiological Fact Sheet, 2012). It makes sense that the life expectancy in the county would only be around 54.5 years of age, and that infant mortality would surpass 50 per 1,000 children, five percent (CIA World Fact Book, 2012). I am being called to do my part to make these numbers improve.
As you can probably tell, this project means the world to me. I am a young woman in college learning skills that will help me provide for myself and one day a family. I want to see other women be able to have the same experiences I am fortunate enough to have. However, I need your help to make this plan come to fruition. I have very few funds to allocate in order to actually go to Uganda, so I am looking elsewhere to help offset the costs. I have looked all over for grants and scholarships that would support a student on a service learning trip, but with no avail. It would just wound me if I couldn't act on this wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the lives of strangers in need. That is why I am turning to you good people.
I am not expecting this GoFundMe page to completely balance out the cost of the trip, but every dollar that you give gets me a dollar closer to reaching my goal.
