My brother Bart Brophy has had an amazing life. The things he has gone through have made him strong. He became paralyzed from the chest down in 1980 playing Box Lacrosse at S.U.N.Y. College of Brockport. He is c 5 6 quadriplegic, which does not leave one much to work with. Only two percent of people in his condition ever gain employment, some live their lives institutionalized. Bart grew up in Freeport , graduated from Garden City HS. Bart finished community college and began working for Grumman Aerospace. Grumman was taken over and Bart was forced to pursue other alternatives. He became a director of a center for independent living, a job he had to leave for health reasons. His advocacy efforts creating Beach Access have been Internationally recognized!
Bart is approaching his 36th year of being paralyzed and his health has declined. There are some things that he will need to help keep him healthy and independent long into his elder years. A Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) cycle and a Wijit driving.and braking system to propel a manual wheel chair and an accessible van, all items that will be crucial to Bart’s health and independence. The FES bike alone will cost at least $15,000, the Wijit w chair $9000, the accessible van, $ 60,000. We do not expect to raise it all. Bart will secure a assistive technology loan for the remainder.
To help with the financial burden of Bart’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor is underway. Please consider making a contribution!
