Help Allison Fight Breast Cancer

Donazione protetta
In March 2016, Allison Efaw (my next door neighbor for 2 years in Fort Story) was informed that her breast cancer had not disappeared as they thought, but instead had metastasized to her ribs, pelvis, lumbar, and thoracic spine. According to Allison, "it happened very quickly and insidiously." She is now categorized as Stage IV breast cancer. For those of you who don't know, that means that she is considered terminal. While the life expectancy varies, there is no cure.

Even though there is no cure, her oncologist does want to treat her. However, the treatment plan to extend her life is to put her on various chemotherapy drugs, switching them out every couple of months with the hope that the cancer can be put in remission for a period of time. They've been told that some people live several years following this protocol. The problem, however, is that after just one dose of chemotherapy, the toxic side effects were so bad that Allison's quality of life plummeted. Allison has decided that she will not die this way. She does not want to extend her life that has no enjoyment for her with her children, husband, and friends.

Instead, she plans to treat her cancer alternatively and become as healthy as possible for as long as possible. She will seek treatment at an alternative cancer treatment in Mexico. Her initial stay will be between 3-8 weeks. While her insurance is more than willing to pay out over $1M for conventional treatment and chemotherapy over the next few years, all cost for this treatment will come out of their own pockets. They are anticipating an initial cost of at least $50,000 to start.

Her husband, Jamie, says that he has been saving for a rainy day since he was 20 years old and it is pouring right now, so he can get the money. But I also know that several people have asked how they can help. This is one way that would help defray their expenses. The Army is moving them to Denver this summer for a year, and Allison really wants to continue homeschooling her three children, so she hopes to get this treatment started very soon. As you know, every little bit helps. What she asks for more than anything is continued prayer- not only for her, but her husband and children and all going through this together. And as always, cards and notes can be encouraging.

As a close, personal friend, I can tell you, that Allison has undergone 8 surgeries and treatments since April 2015. She is a supportive military spouse, dedicated homeschool mom of three young children, and wonderful friend. She believes in the power of prayer and the gift of friendship. Her radiant smile always uplifts us all. We wish we could be more helpful by making dinners, helping with the kids, helping her with the frequent doctor's appointments, etc. but most of us can't.  She has never ever asked for help for herself; she puts everyone else before herself with a truly altruistic perspective on life and regardless of what happens, she does not want to be pitied.

Let's send our united support to Allison and her family in this time of need.

Your donations at this critical time will be greatly appreciated. This will be one helpful way of sending all the love and support across the miles for Allison!

Thank you!
