Adam is 8 years old and starting the 3rd grade at Nord Middle School in Amherst, Ohio.  Adam has faced many health related challenges in his short life.  He was born with a congenital lung defect known as C-CAM and spent the first 60 days of life in the NICU at Cleveland Clinic.  At age 4 Adam was diagnosed with Wilm’s Tumor a form of kidney cancer.  He underwent Chemotherapy, Radiation and a partial nephrectomy.  Adam was also diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension during his cancer treatment.  There is no known cure for pulmonary hypertension.  The family was told that Adam would at some point need a lung transplant.  After a hypertensive crisis in April of 2018 that significantly advanced his disease, a search for a transplant center began.  In July of 2018 Adam underwent evaluation and eventually was accepted at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital’s lung transplant program.  Once listed, Adam and his mom will need to relocate to the Cincinnati area.  As we prepare for this next step in Adam’s treatment, we are asking for the help of family, friends, and amazing community to support them through this journey.

Adam is constantly humming or singing. Some of the words he thinks they are saying...wow, not even close! To Adam, lyrics are inconsequential. When asked why he sings so much, he said ‘there is always a song in my head and heart and I just can’t keep it inside’. At the moment, it’s Christmas Carols day and night! Even with all the blood draws, pump site reactions, scans, pump site transfers, bandage changes, hospitalizations, and treatments, he sings. There is so much love and joy in his little body. If he tried to hold it all in, he might explode! As you go through the holiday season, try to look at life through Adam’s eyes. Do we need bigger, newer, or fancier STUFF? Or is all that inconsequential? Take pleasure in the simple things in life. Choose to be kind. Choose to be happy. If Adam can do it, so can we! ❤️

Adam is in Cincinnati with his Mom for the next few weeks. When they were admitted last week, the plan was to have an MRI and Cardiac Catheterization, place a PICC line and begin the adjustments to his medication. In true Adam fashion, that plan was tossed right out the window! Unfortunately, Adam did not tolerate the anesthesia very well so no MRI or Cardiac Cath. He had a team of Doctors, Nurses and Respiratory Therapists walking on eggshells for several house. Fortunately, he stabilized by Friday evening and they were able to start his new medication in a very small dose. This new medication brings with it a laundry list of side effects, nausea and vomiting being the most common. Adam had his fair share of both on Friday and Saturday. By Sunday Evening, his little tummy was finally calm enough for a cherry popsicle! Today he is back to solid foods.

Please pray that the side effects stay manageable. Pray that the doctors are able to do the MRI and Cardiac Cath without complication in the near future. Pray that the remainder of their time in Cincinnati goes smoothly. If you would like to reach out to Adam and his family, cards and letters of encouragement can be sent to: Adam Szudarek, PO Box 342, Amherst, OH 44001.

What a difference a few hours make! He is remarkable!

It’s that time of year again, back to school! Adam was SUPER excited to begin the 3rd grade last week. After missing several months of the previous school year, he was ready to see his friends again. Sure it was a teeny tiny bit scary, being in a new school. That didn’t deter Adam though, he was eager to face this new adventure head on! He had an ace up his sleeve, he was back to being in the same school as his big brother Carson! Carson is one year older and is the self-appointed champion, protector, helper, friend and occasional pain in the butt to Adam. They are brothers after all, LOL!
In the words of Adam, that first day was EPIC! He came home raving about his teachers, his friends and the new people he met. There was a bit of grumbling about homework, who can blame the kid! What started as such a wonderful day began to go south just after dinner. His mom kissed his head and thought he felt warm. She rubbed his back and he was definitely feverish. After a dose of Tylenol did nothing to bring his fever down, it was off to the ER. When it comes to Adam, any trip to the ER means at least one night in the hospital for observation. Unfortunately, this trip resulted in a 5 night hospital stay for a case of pneumonia. After a few days of IV antibiotics, I’m happy to report that Adam is home and back in school. He is getting settled into his classes and feeling much better.
This Monday was a very eventful day. Adam went back to school and mom and dad got the call they had been waiting for. Shortly after being accepted into the transplant program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, they were told that Adam would need to make an extended visit in the near future. The Doctors need to run additional tests and adjust some medications. This adjustment is a delicate balancing act and will require admission to the hospital for approximately 2-3 weeks. At the end of September, Adam and his parents will be headed to Cincinnati. Mom will be staying there with Adam. Unfortunately, Dad will only be able to stay the weekend before heading home and back to work. Please continue to pray for Adam and his family. If you would like to contact the family, cards and letters of encouragement can be sent to: Adam Szudarek, PO Box 342, Amherst, OH 44001
