On the 29th of July 2015 Carla, Daryl, Lisa, Rebecca and Stephens’s world turned upside down. Lisa had a CT scan that showed a large mass on her brain, they were rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital via RFDS that day. The next day she had an MRI, it showed Lisa had tumours at the base of her spine as well as 2 brain tumours growing from her optic nerve – due to where these were they were unable to be removed surgically. The cancer is Metastic Pilocytic Astrocytoma & Lisa had her first surgery 4th August 2015 to put in a shunt to reduce the swelling on her brain. It went well and Lisa was improving each day. The family had to live at Ronald McDonald house as they live 600 kms away from the hospital, Rebecca and Stephen started school near the hospital.
On the 27th August Lisa had her second MRI to get a baseline of the tumours. The scan showed the tumours had grown significantly & the Drs were very concerned with how quickly they were growing. The Dr’s decided that Radiation was the way to go – she needed to have 30 treatments. On the 15th October Lisa had her last Radiotherapy session, it was hard for her, she lost her hair she was uncomfortable and wasn’t able to eat much, but being beautiful Lisa she smiled. One month later another MRI showed mixed results. Some had shrunk while others had grown. She also had more appear. Lisa was going to have to go have intense chemotherapy for 12 mths. They were going to be in Perth for a long-time. On the 30th November Lisa had her first & last round of chemo as she had a very bad reaction to one of the drugs.
On the 5th of January Carla told us that Lisa was now terminal - she had weeks to months to live. The Slade family wanted to try to do as much as possible with Lisa so the Starlight foundation sent them to Rottnest island for a holiday, they also went down south.
The Slade family are now home giving Lisa palliative care while trying to have a normal life for Rebecca and Stephen.
We wanted to set up this account to help in one small way for the Slade family to hopefully not have to worry about finances for a little bit.
