We are Special Education teachers at the Riverview School located in Queens, New York. We teach a variety of special needs students with varying disabilities such as Autism, Down's Syndrome and Intellectual and Emotional Disabilities. We are dedicated to reaching all of our students goals in the classroom and in the community. Our goal as teachers has always been to foster independence in the students. We are so proud of our students and all of their accomplishments these past six years.
(In order to not disclose any personal information we will be referring to our student as student X)
Student X is one of our students for six years. She came to our building when she was five years old. Her vibrant and energetic personality quickly took the hearts of her teachers and staff in the building. She has the most incredible energy! As a spunky five year old we realized that she was a going to be a firecracker in the classroom. Student X is constantly greeting staff and she endlessly shows kindness and empathy to the younger students in the building.
As a child with Down's Syndrome she has had to face incredible odds from birth. She was born with a hole in her heart that healed later on in her life. She has had to face academic, communicative and social challenges.
Unfortunately, on November 12th, 2018 she suffered a stroke and she is currently facing her toughest challenge. The stroke has left her with paralysis on the left side of her body. She is also having difficulty speaking and is unable to eat. The doctors are still running tests to determine a proper diagnosis.
In order to make her recovery as easy as possible we are doing all we can to rally around her and her family. We are trying to relieve the pressure of daily life by supporting the family with as many monetary donations as we can. These donations will go to support daily life such as rent, heat , and food. Anything that you can provide to support our amazingly strong-willed student and her family would be greatly appreciated.
Sofia Kokkoris Christakis a teacher fundraising for this cause will put the money directly into her account and then create a certified check to give to the Mom of our student. We want to keep this donation as a surprise! This is why we as a team decided to write the Mom a certified check. The first certified check for $7,998.95 has already been made! The donations that we received so far will be given to the Mom on Tuesday November 27th, 2018. The rest of the donations will be given to her the following week. As stated previously this money is to assist our students Mom with life expenses. Since she has been out of work for two weeks she is struggling to pay for daily life expenses such as rent. The funds collected will be spent in assisting with rent, food and heat. She will also be spending the money on treatment and other needs for her daughter. We thank all of you who have donated so far! Please continue to spread the word!
