This is our Beaux...an active, sweet, and highly intelligent nine year old boy who loves God, his family, and Minecraft. On Tuesday, February 28th, Beaux was seen by a doctor for a simple sore throat and cough. The doctor told Beaux's parents, Keith and Kasey, that he had asthma, and sent them home with an inhaler and a course of steroids. Beaux diligently followed the doctor's orders, but he began to have excruciating and unrelenting headaches. On March 14th, after three more doctor visits, Beaux finally received a lumbar puncture and was diagnosed with viral meningitis. Only a few hours after his initial diagnosis, Beaux started demonstrating weakness on his left side, and it was discovered that he had pus on his brain. Beaux was airlifted to UCLA hospital where he quickly went into surgery to clean the insidious infection out. Unfortunately, he lost a large portion of his skull, but exited that operating room with his precious life intact.
Beaux is now in stable but critical condition in the pediatric intensive care unit. The doctors have not told us how long he will remain in the hospital. Although Beaux's condition is stable, he keeps having seizures due to severe brain swelling. Beaux's parents are two hard working individuals, but for obvious reasons, will be away from their jobs during this time which makes this already stressful event even more precarious. Keith and Kasey Houser are wonderful parents, and will do whatever it takes to make this the least traumatizing it can be for their son, which means traveling to UCLA everyday, or staying in a hotel...both of which cost money.
Please consider helping to support Beaux and his parents with medical and living expenses during this time. Any donation at all, big or small, is greatly appreciated. If you cannot donate, please let this story be a reminder to hug your healthy, happy child! Everything happened so quickly...
My prayers are with you and yours. I was in your shoes in the PICU ward just a few weeks ago with my 12 yr old son. Its a very hard thing to experience and wish it upon noone. Idk if uve been told about cafeteria food vouchers, free parking pass list, gas cards or the Tiverton hotel in walking distance. Its dedicated 100 rooms solely for ucla patients/families. Its like $130 a night BUT there is a financial assistance fund. Also, the child resource center, there on the 5th floor will decorate his room themed around things he likes. It doesn't seem like much but we were at hospital for 2 weeks. I stayed at the hotel once n slept with my javi the rest of the time and our expenses were still close to $1000. There are a few nurses that are amazing and our children are blessed to be in their care . Rebecca M. , Jesse " The man", pauola, Shannon, Stephanie (beautiful asian girl) Bri,Catherine (tiny brunette) Myrnalou (stage 4 cancer survivor because of that hospital) My eyes filled with tears reading ur update. He's in the best care possible. Remember, baby steps are BIG steps when ur in the icu Unfortunately, i had to leave there with out the beat to my heart and am now planning a celebration of life for my Son ... MUCH love and prayers are with you
