WHAT HAPPENED?
(PLEASE TAP “UPDATES” FOR THE MOST RECENT NEWS)
In the summer, 13-year old Tyler began having vague lower back pain, first blamed on crazy sleep positions and summer football workouts. His doctor diagnosed a pinched nerve. A few weeks later he began to occasionally fall down with weakness in his legs. Another visit to the doctor & an order for PT, but he wasn’t improving... and the weakness was. So on Monday, September 17, his mother (a nurse at Covenant) took him to the ER there. An MRI revealed a tumor in his lower lumbar area, and the doctor suggested Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor was the place to go. After another 2-hour long MRI at Mott ER, it first appeared that Tyler’s brain and spine were clear except for the original tumor. Surgery was scheduled for Friday, September 21.

AND THEN...
The 9-hour long surgery was successful in removing the majority of the tumor, leaving small “splatters” for removal by radiation so as not to compromise his mobility.  Tyler’s legs need a lot of PT, but we know that with time he will regain and walk again!

Pathology came back Wednesday evening, September 26, “Astocytoma  or Glioma”, Grade 4”. Also, results of another MRI showed a small spot at the base of his brain. Not the report we hoped for, but not without hope and certainly with a battle plan we will fight!

WHO IS TYLER?
Tyler Wirth is 13 years old & in 8th grade at Northeast Middle School. He loves the outdoors, hunting & fishing, and he’s a great photographer of the outdoors, too! Tyler is always smiling and has a great laugh! He loves sports... played Juniors for baseball and Northeast Football.

TYLER’S FAMILY
Tyler’s parents are Mike & Jennifer Wirth. Mike works for the State of Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, and Jen is an RN at Covenant. His brother & best bud is Brady Wirth, 16, a Sophomore at Midland High. He has lots of extended family, grandparents, aunts, uncles & cousins.... and LOTS of friends!!

OTHER FAMILY CONCERNS
Tyler’s dad, Mike Wirth has 3 autoimmune diseases... Scleroderma, Sjogren’s and Reynaud’s as well as Interstitial Lung Disease. While thankfully, he is currently well, winter is coming and that’s when he is most at risk of complications. Last year Mike was hospitalized with the flu  complicated by pneumonia (despite being immunized).

WHAT DO TYLER & HIS FAMILY NEED?
On October 8, Tyler was transferred to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where he began proton radiation treatments. Cincinnati Children's is the #1 hospital in the nation for treating pediatric cancers. Mike & Jen are staying with Tyler in the hospital. Tyler’s Dad has about 3 more weeks of paid leave, before he would need to return to work. And, of course, Jen is no longer working because she remains at Tyler’s side. While they have pretty good health insurance, there is a yearly family deductible. Household bills are piling up. Since Tyler is confined to a wheelchair renovations will need to be done in their home to accommodate his wheelchair. This family is facing a financial crisis, and they need our help and support. PLEASE PLEASE pray and give whatever you can! And pass this link to others for help!
