This is Nash, now. Don’t confuse this with Nash, then. There’s no comparison.
For Nash, then was a nightmare. Then was all neglect and abuse. Then was a filthy stall, no food and a dead cow for a companion. Nash was forgotten and left to die. There was almost no now for Nash. Death would’ve been merciful then.
But there is a now and now is different for Nash. Now is a dream. Now is all love and attention. Now is green grass, a clean, dry stall and proper vet care. Now is a long life. Now is pleasure. Nash has a now because of The Dorset Equine Rescue and all of the wonderful, caring and dedicated volunteers. They need your help. There are more horses like Nash who are suffering. Now.

Nash is an 18 year-old quarter horse that was seized by animal care authorities in MA and taken into foster care early last year. He was taken away from his owners because he was close to starvation, living without shelter or proper care, forgotten. He could barely move when he was seized, dragging his back legs when he tried walking, his joints stiff, his bones brittle. He was days away from being no more.
In early summer of 2014 Nash was obtained by The Dorset Equine Rescue to start a new life. When he arrived his ribs were jutting out, his eyes were sunken and his coat looked like a badly worn rug. Today, Nash has gained weight, made new horse friends, gained strength and agility running in the pastures and he has learned to trust people again. For the first time in years, people can now touch him, groom him, love him. For the first time in years, he is safe.

Please understand that Nash’s success story is a fluke. How Nash was is the norm. Everyday, by the hundreds, by the thousands, horses are forgotten, abused, neglected and shipped out of the country to be sold for meat by kill buyers. Why? Because few care enough to say “stop.” Few care enough to see the horse inside the bag of bones. Few care enough to see hope where others have seen despair.
The Dorset Equine Rescue cares. They care enough for all of us. All the volunteers at The Dorset Equine Rescue care enough to not only say stop but to say stay, stay with us, we’ll make you whole again. We see your spirit. We will make you strong again.

This kind of compassion and commitment is not cheap. It costs thousands of dollars a year to feed, care for and rehabilitate a rescued horse. DER has saved fourty six wonderful horses. Twenty eight of them have now been adopted into loving forever homes. But there is so much more to do, so many more horses to help. The Dorset Equine Rescue is getting by with a borrowed barn but they need their own place. They need a permanent home base to be able to care for these rescued horses who so desperatly need their help . They get calls daily about horses who need to be surrendered for various reasons, but they need more space to be able to help more.
None of these horses did anything to deserve the horrors inflicted upon them. You can help the ones still suffering. You can make an unhappy then become a very happy now. Please help by donating to The Dorset Equine Rescue land/facility fund.  The Dorset Equine Rescue  is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization and all donations are tax deductable.
