Cyclone Fiji Treasure Staff Relief

Cyclone Winston Treasure and Bounty Island Staff Recovery Fund

As you all know, Fiji is reeling from being hit head on by one of the largest cyclones in history. As Cyclone Winston approached, we evacuated all guests and tried to evacuate as many staff as possible for their own safety, however many staff stayed on to look after the resorts as the cyclone struck us.

Whilst we have been fortunate at Treasure and Bounty Island in terms of the damage sustained, many of our staff have not been so lucky. There are so many reports of damage and loss to houses, and tragically in some cases staff have still not been able to reach their families and loved ones who live on islands utterly destroyed and still out of communication. We pray to hear good news about these family members as soon as possible. It is heart-breaking to see our staff working so hard, being so positive, whilst they have still not even spoken to their mothers and fathers, their brothers, sisters, children and friends.

To give you an idea of the challenges our staff are facing: Marika from our Housekeeping Department has lost his entire house. Timothy from the Grounds Department lost the roof of his house, with damage sustained to everything inside. Both Henry from Activities and Sereana from Front Desk have still not been able to reach their loved ones on the hardest hits islands in Fiji; yet are still working tirelessly on the Resort. This is just four of our staff, and we are still gathering details and stories of loss and damage.  We are also trying to assist the wider community as well. For example, we have offered our self-propelled barge free of charge to run emergency supplies to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands with the first departure planned for Saturday.

In this challenging time, Treasure Island Limted is trying to assist all our staff through providing an ongoing income to enable them to rebuild their lives off the island. Many people throughout Fiji have lost everything: their houses; their jobs; and in some cases their loved ones. By bringing our staff back to work on the island clean-up we not only get the resorts back on their feet; we also are getting families across Fiji back on their feet.

However for many it is not enough just to have a job. We are still compiling a list of damage sustained to homes of our staff, and it is harrowing to hear how much damage has been done. The Treasure/Bounty family is still working hard on the islands, with big Fijian smiles we are all so used to, despite facing one of the biggest challenges of their lives. Across all departments, everyone is now focusing on clearing the islands of the debris and wreckage left by Cyclone Winston.

Many people have contacted us asking about the welfare of our staff and how they might contribute.  To provide financial assistance to those worst hit by Cyclone Winston, enabling them to rebuild houses and buy food for their families who have lost everything, Treasure has set up a fundraising page for donations for our Cyclone Winston Staff Recovery Fund.  If anyone wishes to help rebuild the lives of our staff who are the very heart of Treasure and Bounty Island we ask you to visit click this link gofundme.com/9fra5sj4
and make a donation. All donations will be distributed fairly, giving priority to those who have lost the most.  Funds will be distributed as quickly as posible.
