Save Mowgli

This is Mowglie. Three years ago I was hiking in the Wasatch Mountains above Provo and this magnificent beast came wandering up the trail towards me. I was sitting on the trail side at the time just admiring the view and he walked right up to me, sat down next to me and leaned his beautiful head right into my chest. At first I thought he might have been lost or that maybe he was a stray.

We sat there together for a half hour or so and just snuggled. Because I had just lost a very close friend less than a week earlier, and because this friend also had a beautiful black Lab named Isis whom I had fallen very deeply in love with, (and also lost) and looked almost identical to this "stray" this experience was one of the most memorable and emotional I had ever had. I was sobbing like a little girl.

Mowglie followed me home and slept right next to me that night. And the next -- and the next. It took nearly a week before I found his owners. He only lived two doors away. Mowglie wasn't a stray at all. He had a very loving family who raised him from a pup.

I stopped feeding him and his owner, Lee Gunther and his beautiful family started luring him home with puppy treats. He would go home to gobble up the treats and play with Lee and his kids for a few hours --- but then he came right back to me and curled up next to me. Every day. This went on for several months. It's as if Mowglie felt some obligation or duty to be right by my side at this exact time of my life.

Finally, a few days before Christmas, Lee and his sweet wife and kids came down and said, "Merry Christmas Shawn. Dogs choose their owners. And DOG spelled backwards is GOD." This act, I now know was one of the most difficult things Lee had ever done.

It was very, very hard for his kids too. He actually started preparing them weeks before that he would ultimately be given away to me. Mowglie was certainly not a stray. He was very well loved and very well taken care of by this family. Everybody who meets Mowglie falls madly in love with him. He's the most amazing, intelligent sweet animal I've ever known.

Mowglie is not getting better. We were at the hospital most of the night with him. The x rays show that the rubber ball he swallowed is stuck in his stomach and it's not coming out. It's just too big to come out either end without surgery and his lungs are now filled with fluid. He's got pneumonia now too from not being able to breathe very well.

I've never asked for this kind of help before and certainly not in public but I'm quite desperate and so is Mowglie. He's going downhill fast.

It will cost $1,780 to open him up to get the ball out. And I have nothing left to sell to pay for it. A dear friend just committed to the first $300 and we need another $1,500 in the next 48 hours to save his life.

Can you help? $50 from 30 people would save his life. Or $25 from just 60 of my friends would do it. If you are able to help we would be so grateful. Please post your name and how much you're willing to help him out with in the comments below. I don't know how to set up a donation button yet but I'm working on it.

I'm afraid if the surgery isn't done in the next 48 hours we'll have to say goodbye to him and I just can't believe this beautiful friend is supposed to leave us yet. He's only six years old. He's still a puppy.
