Help Lila Beat Cancer

Love and kindness. Generosity of spirit. Always thinking of others. These traits quickly come to mind when describing Lila. She has always been there for us. Now one thing we can do for Lila is alleviate some of the financial burden of her latest journey.
Lila has recently been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia for a third time. She was first diagnosed in 2010, then again in 2014. She has received two stem cell transplants, but it seems that her battle is not over yet.
As many of you will remember, AML is a cancer of the white blood cells that will only stay in remission for a short time. Once in remission, patients move quickly to a stem cell, (“bone marrow”), transplant, which requires even more chemo to prepare the body for a new immune system to take over. In her past two battles, Lila had to receive back-to-back, aggressive chemo treatments to get into remission, each time staying in hospital for over two months, before moving onto stem cell transplant.
Thanks to advances in “targeted gene therapy” cancer drugs, Lila’s UCLA doctors are now trying a different approach, starting a regime of targeted therapies to get her into a first remission - a combination of three different drugs. Once successful, her doctors will then do a third transplant, or opt for a DLI (infusion of her current immune system’s stem cells). Lila will be receiving these treatments as an outpatient, with some short hospital stays, and frequent trips to UCLA for monitoring and transfusions.
Lila’s immune system is already compromised, and on doctor’s orders, she can no longer work. The timeframe of her remission and recovery depends on the evolving treatment plan, but she will certainly not be able to return to work for some time. Her friends and family are reaching out to raise funds to help Lila cover those medical costs not covered by insurance, as well as day-to-day living expenses.
Many of these new therapies and medical breakthroughs have come thanks to all the money raised by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society which Lila has championed; by inspiring LLS’s Climb 2 Cure which has raised over 1.7 million dollars. She has no plans to stop fundraising for LLS, and is determined to ascend Everest basecamp in 2019! As she has proven in the past — Lila can and will conquer.
