On 5/8/19, Kayla was jumping on her trampoline, having fun like a normal 13y/o girl... Minutes later Kayla went into cardiac arrest. That day was the beginning of a terrifying journey Kayla and the Viscusi family were about to face.
Kayla was an active, healthy, 13y/o girl. There were no symptoms. There were no signs.
On 5/14/19, just two days before her 14th birthday, the Viscusi family found out that Kayla had a Congenital Heart Defect called Alcapa. Extremely rare in someone her age. It is usually detected in babies at a month old.
Over the next two weeks Kayla fought like a warrior to get off medication, get stronger, begin to eat again, started to talk, gain more movement and regain some of her teenage sass.
On 6/3/19, Kayla had open heart surgery to successfully repair her heart.
So the journey to recovery continues, one step at a time, one day at a time. Please continue to keep this family in your prayers, continue to read the updates, and let’s help ease the financial strain.
Attached will be all the updates of Kayla’s journey written by her mom, Joy Viscusi, from incident to today. There still lies a long journey ahead of healing, recovery and putting the pieces together.
