I am a transgender man, which means I will very soon be taking hormones and I hope to also get top surgery this year.
At the moment, I bind my chest. Unfortunately binding has caused so much pain and damage that I'm putting my body under massive pressure and putting myself at risk of a serious injury. I almost constantly have massive bruises around my chest and back, and sometimes the pain is so bad that I can hardly breathe. However, binding is the only way I can leave the house and relieve the huge amount of dysphoria surrounding my female chest. So, as you can see, I'm in a bit of a pickle and...
I need surgery.
NHS waiting times for top surgery are 3+ years. If I wait this long, I am at risk of breaking my ribs, or worse, putting myself in the position where I can't get surgery at all because of the damage from binding. If I stopped binding, I would be restricting myself to a life indoors. It is impossible to convey the severity of the anxiety and dysphoria I would face if I stopped, so really this is my only option. Anyone who knows me will know that I am an extrovert. I love socializing, going out and living my life to the fullest as any normal 21 year old would. My quality of life as a pre-hormone, pre-surgery transgender man is not at its peak - but I'm now faced with the very scary possibility that it could get a lot worse if I don't have this surgery soon. So, having read all this, I am now reaching out and asking for your help. Any donation to my cause would be absolutely incredible. If you can't donate, just sharing this would be an amazing help.
I am not the only person in this position. Waiting times for transgender people on the NHS are appallingly long. I feel lucky just being able to take hormones sooner than most waiting on the NHS, but it is a privilege I have had to pay for, and it does not extend to being able to afford surgery on my own.
