Help Save Carbon - Aid For His Medical Expenses

Donation protected
Hi everyone. Carbon is my 6 month old rescue pup from Ruff Start Rescue. He came all the way from Oklahoma up here to Minnesota, and from the moment I saw his adorable, yet very sad, face in his profile I knew I had to adopt him. That sadness didn’t last long. From the moment I’ve had him, he has shone as one of the sweetest, happiest, goofiest boys in the world. He’s playful and exploratory, and hasn’t found a toy or stick he didn’t love to chew on.

Unfortunately, he also sometimes chews on the wrong things. On Friday, January 18th, Carbon got into a bottle of ibuprofen while I was at work. He consumed up to 200+ tablets. The active drugs in ibuprofen are extremely toxic to animals and with that amount ingested things can be very detrimental. He was vomiting and lethargic. I rushed him to the emergency vet at the University of Minnesota where he was quickly admitted to the ICU.

Carbon has suffered an acute kidney injury. The kidneys are extremely vital in maintaining the health of the body, and the ibuprofen damaged his significantly. He has been on an IV for fluid management and has a catheter to monitor and aid his urination. He was given lipids to coax the toxins out of his nervous system, as well as some other additional treatments to rid those toxins in his system and to aid his kidneys.

Things are hopeful for now, as he is urinating A LOT (this is a good thing for now!), and his mental state has slowly appreciated. This type of thing could have put him into a coma or killed him, so we are very happy to be in this scenario comparatively. He still has a ways to go. Healing his kidneys, stabilizing and lowering his kidney values and getting off the IV are all steps that need to happen before he is in the clear.

The costs for his medical management are rising, too. As a young guy just a couple years removed from college, I certainly don’t have a lot of funds for this kind of thing. I am currently dipping myself further into debt for this care. Of course, this means my best friend gets the care he needs and has a fighting chance to recover, so this is a more than fair trade. That said, I am beginning to need help. As he continues to stay in the ICU, each day leads to further costs and I’m reaching the point at which I can’t further plunge into debt. If you, or anyone you know, can help in any way or give any amount, I would be eternally grateful. You would not only help me and the incredible staff at the UMN Vet Center give Carbon the care he needs, but you would help my boy keep his life and in turn continuing to make me the happiest dog owner in the world.

Carbon came to me in a time where I was struggling with depression and anxiety, and having him has helped immensely. It’s a cliché to say “I don’t know who rescued who” but rescuing him and having him in my life has done more for me than I could have ever thought possible. He’s the most important thing in my life, and one of the biggest reasons I smile each and every day. I wish everyone could experience the joy he exudes when I get home everyday, when I wake up in the morning, the flurry of kisses he gives when he hops on the couch (or really any time he enters a room), or the laughs he induces when he tries to get you to play with him or scurries to roll in the grass like a maniac on a walk. Carbon is strong and fighting each minute. Help us keep that fight going, so he can continue bringing that extra bit of joy to not just my world, but everyone’s that he comes in contact with.

Thank you endlessly for anything you can do.
